Microsoft releases Windows Defender browser extension for Google Chrome

Microsoft today released an extension for Google Chrome that should protect users of the browser against phishing and malicious websites. The extension is available in the Chrome Webstore under the name Windows Defender Browser Protection.

uBlock can also block malicious sites. It comes with some pre-installed AdBlock filter lists, which are specifically meant to block domains which engage in malvertising, phishing, etc.

I do wonder how this extension checks for malicious sites. Does it do the smart thing, and automatically download a local list of bad sites (much like uBlock or AdBlock Plus), or does it do take a more malicious turn, and force the browser to submit each domain one visits, and wait for a thumbs up/thumbs down from Microsoft (who totally isn’t trying to spy on you… oh wait, yes they are).
