Micron's RealSSD C300 SSD Is The Fastest Ever

Micron’s no stranger to the world of flash memory, but it looks like the company is dead-set on going head-to-head with the Seagates and Western Digitals of the world. The new RealSSD C300 solid state drive is reportedly the first to deliver native SATA 6GB/s performance, which should mean that it does great in the benchmarks that are sure to come. The drive is based on 34nm MLC NAND flash and supports the high-speed ONFI 2.1 standard. It’ll be available in 1.8" and 2.5" form factors, with both supporting 128GB and 256GB. Pricing has yet to be made known, but both should ship in Q1 of 2010. Rest assured we’ll be doing everything we can to get one in the lab!

I wonder what controller it will use? Some quick googling doesn’t reveal which they use in their current products and their website was (as usual) useless. I found that they apparantly first used their own design (Micron have at least in the past had a fair amount of logic developers) but later switched to another supplier.
Considering Micron and Intel produces flash chips in a joint venture, perhaps they also get to use Intel controllers?

I don’t think it will be an Intel SSD controller, i’d guess it may be Micron’s own design, or perhaps a SandForce.
Let’s hope before that drive goes on sale, there will be more powerful and faster SATA 6Gb/s controllers than the Marvell one.

According to the folks at DailyTech, Micron is making the drives out of NAND flash produced by IM Flash Technologies, its joint venture with Intel. The site also got word from Micron that the RealSSD C300 features “a new proprietary controller and firmware that was designed in partnership with [Marvell]” as well as 256MB of DDR3 cache memory, however, so this isn’t quite a re-badged Intel X25-M with a faster interface.

The SSD controller for the C300 has been confirmed is a Marvell, and looks very impressive.

Some more information is now available
Lets hope at least some of the stuff the marketing people say is true!
