Messenger Plus, SearchNow, DSO Exploit, and all the rest

Ain’t it great that when I download Messenger Plus, I ignore the warning about SearchNow, and from then on my IE has been hacked with the MySearchNow toolbar at the bottom of my browser. Since then I’ve had to use Firefox, which is pretty darn good, but has some errors. Whenever I open Internet Explorer, I get that toolbar. I can close it, but the pop ups will carry on, at nearly every new page. I have a pop up blocker running from my IE, but these pass through. I don’t want to download a Yahoo/Google toolbar, because I don’t want anything else leeching itself onto my IE.

Also, as a result of the MySearchNow toolbar, methinks, when running SpyBot S/D, I get the DSO Exploit. Usually the entries found can be deleted, but it keeps coming.

What do I do?

Sorry, this should probably be somewhere else, but Newbie Forums all good.

HijackThis is a very usefull tool:

http://www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html

It will give you a list off all the plug-ins and add-ons that have installed into explorer and the ability to remove them. Download any updates for Spybot as well.

you can go to control panel - add/remove programs and remove mysearchnow.
also remove the following from registry:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://mysearchnow.com/searchbar.html
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://mysearchnow.com/searchbar.html
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://mysearchnow.com/searchbar.html
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://mysearchnow.com/searchbar.html
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://mysearchnow.com/searchbar.html

Spybot S&D has always been quite capable of removing that toolbar on my machine. As was suggested, update S&D and run it, and that should irradicate the SearchNow “toolbar,” with no need of editing the registry. The DSO Exploit is a bug actualy, and there’s no problem really there. Spybot S&D is well aware of this bug, and eventualy there should be an update to cure it. In the interrum, it’s really nothing to worry about, just an annoyance when running S&D. (This is well documented.) SpywareBlaster is also a really good product, and works well on my machine back-to-back with Ad-Aware 6, Spybot S&D, and AVG Free antivirus.

To any or all of the above!

I have also got similar problems with SearchNow. I have run SpyBot and SpywareBlaster and HiJack this (although I must admit that the results of it mean little to me). Each time I “fix” problems they all get fixed but they all come back again even having edited the registry as suggested above.

As I have multiple accounts set up on my machine do I have to run all these programs for each user (including Administrator)?

This may or may not be related but I would welcome advice on thiws as well(!) but I also have several desktop items that I cannot delete or get properties of as well as several items when I click “Favourites” that do not appear when I go into “Organise Favourites”.

I am desperate to get my machine safe as I have 2 teenagers who use the machine (and may have inadvertently introduced the problems) and I do not want to leave open the opportunity for further intrusions into my machine.
I have Norton AntiVirus and Internet Security 2004 installed but perhaps need a bit of guidance into use as I would have thought this should have stopped the problems in the first place.

I would appreciate any durther help that might solve these for me.

Many thanks in advance
