Just want to share my experience with the Memorex True 8X DVD+/- Drive which is essentially the OEM version of Pioneer A07 but cost $20 less after rebate. I also like its black front and silver drawer better than A07.
Out of the box drive ID indicate a Memorex Drive with Firmware 1.06. I immediately flash the hacked Pioneer 1.05 firmware to enable 8X burning. Afterware the drive ID indicates a Pioneer DVR-107 drive!!!
Start testing using Nero 6. First test is el-cheapo CompUSA (Princo) 1X DVD-R. It successfully burned at 2X and 6X but failed verification at 6X. This is consistent with the previous report.
Next test I used Platinum 4X DVD-R (media code AN32) from Microcenter. I can only burn this disc at the rated 4X. These are truely terrible medias and I can even see many imperfections on the writing surface of several discs under light!! This is surprising given that a previous thread reported that these AN32 burns at 8X. I suspect it depends on which batch of disc you get.
Finally I tested Kypermedia 4X DVD-R (media code CMC MAG. AF1) These disc burns at 6X and 8X and verified successfully. Interestingly upon close inspection I can see distinct color changes between the inner zone and outer zone as though the Pionner switched laser power going from 6X to 8X!!! It does not seem to affect playback quality though on my DVD player. Again according to the previous thread this disc has problem at 8X but on my batch these disc seems to be fine at 8X except for the color difference between the 6X zone and 8X zone. Has anyone observe such phenomenon on their DVD-R burning at 8X? Any inputs greatly appreciated.
At 8X speed the burning finished at an astonighing 8 Minutes and 10 seconds. Amazing.
Anyway the bottom line is that the Memorex True 8X IS the same as Pioneer A07 and is slightly cheaper and IMO better looking. Will try to do more test later...
