Hello,

I’ve been using this drive for 2 years now i think and burned alot of cds with it, since i reinstalled my computer with a new disk (160Gb, from which only 130 are found btw…) my floppydrive doesnt work anymore and my cd-writer gives me strange errors. can’t perform start of TAO or DAO; medium speed error; no additional sense information… If anyone could be able to help me with my problem i would be very thankfull.

I use WinXP and have allready tried to do aspi installs (from adaptec to the nero ones and forceaspi). I tmight be usefull to know that I try to burn an image file here in ISO format, though I never succeed burning, no audio, no data, no images

Lots of things come to mind.

Firstly - your 160GB drive only appearing as around 130GB. This could be down to the difference between marketing gigabytes (the ‘decimal’ gigabyte of 10^9, otherwise known as a billion, bytes) and the ‘binary’ gigabyte of 1024^3 bytes. However 160 marketing GB comes out as 149 binary GB - the size of my 160GB drive is reported as 149GB in Windows.

You’re using Windows XP - for reliable operation on IDE hard discs above 137 marketing GB (128 binary GB), you must have both Service Pack 1 and the patch in Knowledge Base Article 331958 - though you could instead the patch in article 812415 as it contains an even later version of atapi.sys.

You also need BIOS (motherboard BIOS for motherboard controllers, or add-in BIOS for a controller card or controller chip on the motherboard) support for 48 bit LBA operation. All modern motherboards / controllers have this anyway.

Adaptec ASPI is best done away with - it can cause problems and you’re unlikely to need it with modern software. Certainly Nero doesn’t need it. You don’t need to install Nero ASPI separately on Windows XP - as the support code needed already exists in the Operating System. The Nero installer puts the Nero ASPI DLL in the Nero program folder, which is all that’s necessary.

If you need to burn as a non-Administrator using Nero’s ASPI (or use any other software that uses SPTI, sometimes known as DeviceIoControl, as a non-Administrator), install the Nero BurnRights tool as an Administrator, run it, and make the necessary changes.

Information about how I uninstalled Adaptec ASPI can be found in my second post in this thread, and yet more comments about the problems it caused me at the bottom of page 1 of this thread. Note that you’ll have four files in total to find and delete if you follow my instructions, as you’ve installed ASPI 4.60 - they are aspi32.sys, wnaspi32.dll, also wowpost.exe and winaspi.dll.

The next thing - I’d uninstall your current version of Nero, reboot, and install 5.5.10.56, which is the latest version of Nero 5.5. You can get that from ftp://ftp4.nero.com/Nero551056.exe.

The actual error in the log isn’t terribly illustrative - it’s sense code 4 (hardware error), key 0x26, qual 0x00 (invalid field in parameter list). This seems to happen in various situations where things just aren’t quite right.

You may find that things don’t work as well as they should if you are trying to burn from the 60GB hard disk - as it shares an IDE channel with the writer. This may not be an issue in practice, but to eliminate it, I’d make sure that both your swap file and the source data are on the 160GB hard disk when burning.

One final thought - if you have on-access virus scanning, try disabling it when you try to burn.

Hopefully something in this helps. The floppy drive is something I’m a bit bemused on - is there anything in the Device Manager about that? Are you sure it’s not any antivirus software causing the problem (try disabling it…).

David

Thank you David, Installing the new version of nero worked, its kinda weird since I was allways using the other one before

#4

Okay, i thought it was solved, i have a fresh install of Winxp, i have SP1 installed and i installed the harddisk 160 gb correctly, only thing is the writer now, installed the right nero, then disabled the virus scanner…still getting the damned error

Unfortunately the sense code list I have here doesn’t really throw that much light on what’s happening.

I’d start by uninstalling Adaptec ASPI, as I described previously. If that doesn’t fix it, try different CD media. If that doesn’t fix it, try different write speeds (Nero has annotated this error, which is different to the one you had before, as a medium speed error).

You may also find it enlightening to search for a firmware upgrade for the writer - though whether you’ll find one for what I suspect is a pretty old drive, I don’t know. If my sense code list is correct, code 0x64 may be something to do with an invalid track mode.

You do indeed have a suitable IDE driver installed for your large IDE hard disk.
