[QUOTE=troy512;2148787]where did you download the Media player codec pack? how are you installing it? what are your symptoms of IE7 acting a little funny?
in my experience installing the all-in-one codec packs to be a bad thing.
i also use VLC player. some members prefer KMPlayer
Well, I now share your experience. I got the MPC from download.com, which has been reliable up to now. I’ve heard about VLC but I don’t need a stand-alone player, I need codecs to plug into WMP to play in sites that require it to work. I know the “indie” crowd is all over the alternatives, but the mainstream sites (especially news) are still doing WMP and Realplayer.
For example, I like to watch the little TV clips on Bloomberg.com. But you need a special codec to play them. Microsoft will give it to you if you use IE, but if you use any other browser, it doesn’t work. Hence my search for codecs.
Anyhow, by “little funny” I meant that embedded audio and video stopped playing on sites where they had always worked. This happened in IE only. My other browsers appeared to be unscathed.
Then this morning I turned on my machine and nothing would work! I couldn’t open anything on my desktop, not even Windows Explorer. I had to reboot my system from disc and restore the system files from a couple of days ago. Now everything “seems” OK, but I’ll withold final judgment for a couple of days.
I’m resigned to playing my Bloomberg on IE. I don’t want to do this again!
