does anyone have this problem before? I burned several dvd+and-r. Most of them came out looking like one area of the disc is somewhat darker than the other. Is it the dye, disc brand, or my liteon sohw822s W/hacked sohw832s firmware upgraded?

I used teon and maxell discs. the teons+rs came out looking quite clear(after the firmware upgrade), but when looking closer you can see that one ring is darker than the other, same thing happened with the maxell+rs. the -r maxells on the other hand only have uneven coloration near the area where the upc bar is.

Can someone help me plz? I am going to get some 19.99 TDK 8x 50pk DVD-ror+r from Compusa and try that out, is that a good idea or should i save my 20 bucks and look for something else?

#6

What speed are you burning each of the discs at? The drive shifts between speeds at faster burn speeds. That could be responsible the different dye color.

#7

Just another thought, if what you are burning is smaller that the full capacity of the disk, the area of the disk that was not recorded on will be a diffrent color than the part that was recorded on.

#8

lol, you think i am a noob or something? Darn, wish i can show you a picture of the disc, then you will know what i am talking about.

#9

i am burning them at the lowest speed 2.4x for dvd+rs and 4x(i dont know why it cannot go at 2x, even when Alcohol120% and DVDDecryptor says it can go at 2x.)for DVD-Rs.

#10

here a crappy draw, hope it clears some confusions :a

#11

In other words they are kind of splotches of discoleration. I have seen pictures of what you are talking about but have not had that problem myself. If I recall right people seemed to think that it was defective media but if you are getting it with diffrent brands, perhaps there is something else. Did this problem just show up or has your drive always done it? Also, have you tried burning at the rated speed (disks don’t always burn beter slower). Just trying to come up with some ideas to trouble shoot your problem. Did it happen with every firmware you have tried and or did it acompany a firmware change?

#12

The TDK 50 pc 8x +R I bought was RICOHJPNR02. These were in a cake box that had a cream colored base and the 25 pc of +R I bought in the standard package were CMC MAG E01.
All of the 8x -R I have bought so far have been TTG 02.
Have had 3 coasters out of 11 from the CMC but the RICOHJPN and the TTG 02 seem to be really good stuff.

#13

before the hacked sohw832s firmware upgrade and with the original sohw822s firmware, things were even more horrible when burned at a high speed(8x), the splotches were even more visible than after the upgrade. When looking from a far distance, the disc burned with the new firmware upgraded(sohw832s) looks fine and clear, but when tilting it a little bit in the light you can actually see some light splotches.

#14

I get those sometimes too, occasionally the rings are really dark and you can tell there are hills of errors in kprobe where the discoloration is. I also have a liteon 812s@832s. When the rings aren’t dark though, they make no difference for me in quality.

Don’t see these rings when burning the Maxell I just got from staples though, DVD+R MAXELL002.

#15

Folks,

I saw both the DVD+R and the DVD-R at Staples. The DVD+R cakebox had a free DVD marker in them. Both the cakeboxes were Made in Japan.

So has anyone used these and which ones wiill you recommend … the DVD+R or the DVD-R. I have a Pioneer 107D burner.

Thanks …

#16

Since you have the Pioneer, I’d recommend the DVD-R. The A07 really likes MXLRG03.

#17

Sounds like it might be a charicteristic of 812s drives with some media, even good media. I would say, if it kprobes ok and plays ok, ignore it. Other than that you would just have to keep trying media (or firmwares since that seemed to effect it) unless someone else with that drive and problem has a firmware/media solution that they have found to work. If it really bugs you that bad, I guess you may have to get another drive. I have never seen it on my liteon but it’s an 851s (currently 851s@832s). Sorry I couldn’t help more.

#18

Yeah it doesn’t bug me all that much, I generally only see it burning at 8x, and not that often. If I do a strategy swap, say for CMCMAGE01 I use CMCMAGR01, I tend not to see it at all. I thought about getting another drive for a while, but meh. The liteon works, I don’t need perfect discs, and it was cheap anyway.

Also, these MAXELL002s kinda suck. They work and all, but a lot more errors than anything else I’ve used (barring some g04s), and they start to get flaky at the 4.3 gb mark. I saw slightly better results using MAXELL001 strategy and burning at 4x.

#19

Yeah I guess thats the way its going to be with any drive. You just have to find out what media works best with your model of drive not to mention your particular drive/firmware combo. Its not unheard of for one drive with a specific firmware to like a media and another drive with the same model and firmware doesn’t like it. You just have to find what your drive likes and keep using it.

Went to my local Staples and found behind the 4x were 8x and they rang up sale price. I picked up a +R and -R, looked like the last 2. Have not done a scan yet but if anyone is interested I can later.
