Matshita UJ-841S from Asus laptop

I’ve only had this laptop for a year now, and the drive doesn’t work at all.
When I put a disc in, nothing happens. It sounds like it tries to read it, but then it goes idle. This happens with CD-R, DVD+/-R, and DVD movies.

I know the drivers are windows generic, and the firmware tool on here is for Vaio only. So where do I start?

BTW, the device shows up normally in device manager, and it says that the device is working properly.

Asus W3V
1.86 GHz Pentium M
2 GB DDR2 533
120 GB 7200 RPM HD
Windows XP Pro SP2

Please help.

I think this drive is dead.

Thanks for the speedy reply. I wish you had better news for me.

BTW, I looked up the replacement at http://estore.asus.com/shop/ and it’s the most expensive item for this lappy. Hell, the keyboard is only $20, then the Matshita replacement is $155. Boo, that’s crap.

Not to worry, though. I have an internal drive hooked up with a USB-IDE adapter. It gets to be a bit much to carry around though.
