Matshita UJ-811 reads all CDs and most DVDs--but not the Recovery DVD

This seems strange when I compare it to the unfortunate multitude of problems other people have with their Matshi*ty drives. My drive recognizes all CDs and most DVDs–including burned DVDs and most commercial ones. But, it won’t recognize a spindle of burnable DVDs that I just got (I might have gotten a- discs?), and more importantly, it won’t recognize my Toshiba Recovery DVD!

I’ve tried booting from the DVD; it pauses, and then boots Windows from the hard drive. I’ve tried uninstalling the drive and the IDE controller; various configurations of PIO and whatnot in the IDE options; starting my computer in Selective Startup mode; uninstalling all of my DVD related software… nothing is working.

I can see most DVDs, so it’s not just the DVD laser. I really want to wipe this machine with the recovery disc. Any ideas? Just for the curious, below is a HijackThis logfile, created after starting up in Selective Mode and then starting Zone Alarm and MSN Messenger. TIA…

Which brand of DVDs did you buy?
The HijackThis won’t help, as the drive is supposed to boot before Windows starts. It could be a hardware issue.
Have you tried copying the recovery DVD with another PC and DVD burner?

Thanks Evilboy–that thought just occurred to me in the shower this morning! Off to find a friend with a working DVD burner…
