OLED panel shipments are expected to increase 7.3% year-on-year (YoY) to 110.11 million units or 42.1% to approximately $893 million in fiscal year 2008. Yano Research, a Japanse research firm, announces this in a recent report.
Currently the shipment value is growing faster than shipment volume. The market for active matrix panels have high added value and high unit prices, says Yano to TechOn!.
The main reason behind the market’s rapid growth can be found in the Japanese telecommunication industry and mobile phone manufacturers. The industry has mainly adopted active matrix panels as the main panel for their handsets.
Besides being the main panel for mobile phones, active matrix panels are used for TVs, car navigation systems and digital photo frames. Shipments of active matrix panels are estimated to grow 705.9% year-on-year to ¥41.355 billion in fiscal year 2008.
Shipments of passive matrix OLED panels are estimated for a 6.6% YoY decline to 94 million units in 2008. Most passive panels are used as sub panels on mobile phones and MP3 players.
Overall the OLED market can expect at least a double digit YoY growth in and after fiscal 2009.
