first see the bottom of this post

so i’m asking this;what’s the distance from laser-pickup to dvd-r
(anyone with crappy ol’ broken dvd-rom reader or writer that could test this…? i just got mine  )

i can try it on some cd-player,but anyone knows if this is the same thing (go on,help-out…it’ll prevent me from dismantling my new dvd burner… :iagree: ) or dvd burner will have pickup closer to the disc itself?

i don’t think i can find such data on ecma pdf’s…

I’m afraid I can’t help you with the pickup distance, but thank you so much for drawing my attention to that superb piece of software.

It’s a superb idea, especially with the amount of data on a DVD.

since that post i have dismantled my old ‘burned’ teac cd-rewriter(faulty PSU ate it…alongside rest of the PC…faulty PSU’s eat everything!) and i have seen that i has at least 1mm distance from the disc(at least! as pickup itself can go 2-3mm up/down to focus he beam…even when it’s protruded the most,it’s 1mm from the disc…)

when i saw this,i tried it with my sony cd-player…test went fine…skipping playback but no damage to disc or pickup…

so i’ll try it with dvd-rw too,as i believe there’s some tolerancy (for example reader can probably accept slightly warped discs,so it wil probably accept thin layer of tape on one spot too…) and if it has at least 0.5mm distance(even less should suffice),i’ll be fine…

i think this test will go just fine…

this way of simulating the damage is a must;i don’t accept anything that i can’t test for myself…
if par2 passes the test,fine…

btw.piece of tape was cca. 2x2 mm and i was surprised how well cd-player handled it…

i expected no output at all (on covered spot),but it skipped much less than anticipated…

huh…this is fun…

the dvd-rw masking test also went well (no damage to disc or burner!),but quickpar failed

please follow the further developments on quickpar forum
http://www.quickpar.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php4?p=1497#1497

i will add some screenshots(i took some images of the process itself…yes, and process of removing the tape…) and an explanation of the method shortly…

isobuster is such an excellent application!

ok,web-page is up
http://kotisivu.mtv3.fi/ii00i/optical/media%20masking.htm
(cca.540kB web page + some extras)

dvd is as impressive and robust as cdr,it seems…

this way you can toy with your media to see what amount of damage it can whitstand, but without really hurting your media…
