I am have a hard time with these external burners. Please help. I have tried Sony and TDK media and I still receive the same error message. Here is the log:

RITEK F1 discs can be variable in quality, so I’d stick with your Sony ones.

What happens when you reduce the burn speed to say, 8x or 12x?

Neither of my external burners will burn right at 16x. I use them at 8x.

I am very frustraited. I bought this product because I wanted to burn at a minimum of 18X. I was told that Mad Dog received a rating of 4.8 out of 5 from consumer review. However, it has not met my expectations so far. I would like to burn at a minimum of 16X, like other DVD±RW I have used in the past. Is there anything that I can do that will fix this problem. Normally, I use Sony, but after having less than a 50% ratio of successful disk I bout TDK’s only to have the same problem. I have also burned at 12X and had the same problem. To burn at 8X is unacceptable.

I’ve known successes burning at 16x+ with external drives, but generally for those speeds I’d use an internal drive.

Have you tried things like a different USB cable (or Firewire, if that’s what you’re using)?

Maybe you could try the drive hooked up to a different PC and see if performance is any better - performance, as well as depending on the drive chipset, can also depend on the motherboard chipset.

For example: On my PC with an ATi SB400 chipset, I’m limited to 8x with my externals. On this PC, which has an Intel chipset, I can squeeze 12x out of my external drives.

Another reason for trying the drive hooked up to another PC, if the drive could be faulty. Trying just one 8x burn would also rule that our as well, if successful.

WOW! Now that is something that I have not considered. So the problem may not be with MD-18XTLAE but with the chipset on the laptop because of limitations. Huumm… make sense. I will try at 8X and see what happens. Thanks will let you know what happens.

Okay… I’m now 3 out of 4 for a 75% success ratio at 8X, but DAMN it takes 12 minutes to burn a DVD. I really don’t want my burns to fail 25% of the time. Please help. I don’t have a firewire on this laptop. Any suggestions on how to speed up the burning process on my laptop.

Well, that’s a slight improvement.

If resources are low (USB needs all the CPU cycles it can get), try not running anything else whilst burning.

Do you know anyone with a desktop you can hook the drive up to, to see if there’s any improvement?

If the limitation is your motherboard chipset then there may not be a whole lot you can do, other than reducing the amount of stuff running whilst burning. I generally burn at 8x anyway, so being limited to that really doesn’t bother me, but I can understand your frustration as you bought an 18x drive. :slight_smile:

Ok… here we go again. I am now loosing about 75% of my disk even burning on a single drive at 8X. It has to be Nero. anyone please help. Here is another log: Someone Please Help Me…

Is it not possible to ask a friend if you can hook it up to their desktop, and perform 3-4 burns?

I don’t think the problem is Nero, but then I’ve seen stranger things: you can try ImgBurn (it’s free) and see if that gives the same errors.

Okay… the drives are bad. All three of them. That’s almost impossible. How did Mad Dog receive this great rating. Are there any drives you recommend to purchase?

3 drives are bad?!

Replacing them with another brand (one with ongoing support, which I believe Mad Dog doesn’t have now), might indeed be a good idea - if a new one doesn’t work, then we need to investigate further.

A LiteOn external drive may be a good idea, for a couple of reasons: they’re good with all kinds of media, not just the primo stuff; and we have very good support here with our LiteOn forum and tools.
