Lost burn speed - DVD-R only burns at 4x

Alrighty here goes.
I have searched this site and everywhere else but cannot seem to find a solution to my problem. I have a LG GSA-4163B DVD burner and am using LG DVD-R 16x media. I cannot choose any burn speed, apart from max, which actually ends up being only 4x. I have the latest firmware and nero 6 lastest update. CD burning is the same, I can only choose max, but at least the speed is 48x. Info Tool only puts write speed at 4x and I even tried alcohol to burn but still only 4x. This media is rated at 16x on a sony drive using nero Info Tool. I have burnt no name DVDs before at 16x. I have since uninstalled alcohol to no avail. I tried reinstalling nero also to no avail, but after new installation my background in nero and colour was the same as before so perhaps it didnt completley uninstall it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated because I have been after a solution for weeks now!!
Cheers

You probably need to upgrade your burners firmware to the latest available, which would be A106, as the media is not being recognised by the burner.

A region free version is here

done that, still dosen’t work. In fact the firmware update stated it was specifically for 16x DVD-R but hey.Any other ideas??Or should I just resign to unsupported media.
Cheers

Post back the Media ID - from Nero’s CD-DVD Speed , disk info tab.

The LG firmware doesn’t know about this media so will only offer the default burn speed (4x) and the default burn strategy which is bad news.

Get some Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden media & you’ll be fine.

Cheers man, you’ve saved me a lot of time and effort.
Thanks heaps!!
