Looking to go Blu Ray with my Media Center

First off I would like to say hello and introduce myself. I am Andy Lawson I live in IL and I have a decent knowledge of computers. I have an Associates Degree as a Personal Computer Technical Specialist. I am married and have been so for a year and a half, and no kids yet.

The main reason for this post is I have a PC Specs and I would like to use it as a media center and be able to watch Blu Ray on my TV. The vid card has hdmi out and I am able to hook up digital sound to my reciever w/ 5.1 DD. I am just worried about what to get as far as a Blu Ray Drive and if its going to be able to actually play it. I’ve heard Windows is iffy if you can play Blu ray but I’m thinking that someway it can be done.
The drive I am looking at is this one. The only thing I noticed is that it has only 2mb cache and some have up to 8mb and I’m wondering if that would be an issue. Plz help!!!

Thanks,
Andy

We have a dedicated Blu-ray forum here for hardware/software questions, so I’ve moved this one there.

Welcome to cdfreaks, Andy.

I would say that your PC, with Q6700 Core2Quad and GeForce 8600GT, has more than enough power and specs to playback Blu-ray. I wouldn’t hesitate to get a Blu-ray drive and enjoy it!

As for which drive, I see you’re looking at a blu-ray reader (not burner). I usually ask my friends and in this forum, do you have any plan to burn a Blu-ray in the future, for data storage, home made hidef movie, etc? For a few more dollars (well $60 more) you can get the newest 8x Blu-ray burner from Pioneer BDR-203BK, $199 shipped here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827129037

There are also other 8x burners from LG, Sony and Panasonic, but currently their price ranging $250 - $400.

If you only want a reader, the LG GGC-H20L is currently $99.99 shipped and it’s one of the highest rating Blu-ray drives. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136154
