I've decided to buy an enclosure + and internal hard drive as opposed to an external hard drive, as I'm not crazy about the reviews for the externals. I also like that I'll have the freedom to use more than one drive and a disc burner (if I get a 5.25"). I've been reading through the Enclosures sub-forum and I'm really overwhelmed and can't figure out what a good one is.
I'd ideally like one with FireWire plus USB. A 5.25" would be nice as I could put a burner into it, but my priority is a hard drive. Plumax seems to be a really popular brand, but I came across >>this one<<, where people claimed it fried their drives. I'm really confused about what to get because of this kind of thing. In my reading, I've also determined that it's important to get the ones with the good chip sets. What are the best chip sets these days? Many brands don't list the chip sets (for example, I couldn't find out what the chip sets of Macally brand enclosures are)...
Hopefully some people who have reliable enclosure/HD combos will comment.
If you can reccommend HDs too, that'd be great (100-500 GB is my range)
EDIT: Since we're in the age of SATA, I should probably be going that route.
