Looking for an Enclosure Solution

I’ve decided to buy an enclosure + and internal hard drive as opposed to an external hard drive, as I’m not crazy about the reviews for the externals. I also like that I’ll have the freedom to use more than one drive and a disc burner (if I get a 5.25"). I’ve been reading through the Enclosures sub-forum and I’m really overwhelmed and can’t figure out what a good one is.

I’d ideally like one with FireWire plus USB. A 5.25" would be nice as I could put a burner into it, but my priority is a hard drive. Plumax seems to be a really popular brand, but I came across >>this one<<, where people claimed it fried their drives. I’m really confused about what to get because of this kind of thing. In my reading, I’ve also determined that it’s important to get the ones with the good chip sets. What are the best chip sets these days? Many brands don’t list the chip sets (for example, I couldn’t find out what the chip sets of Macally brand enclosures are)…

Hopefully some people who have reliable enclosure/HD combos will comment.

If you can reccommend HDs too, that’d be great (100-500 GB is my range)

EDIT: Since we’re in the age of SATA, I should probably be going that route.

I would really look into getting an eSATA enclosure and using a SATA drive in it. Just to keep up with the technology.

I have one of these with a Sammy 203B inside and i can get 20x burns with it hooked to my desktop and my older lappy with eSATA PCMCIA card. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817716048 i’m sure it will work with a HDD in it. Also it’s USB.

I was just about to say I was just thinking that

I always liked this enclosure but haven’t got around buying one yet: http://www.inoi.com/English/dw567b.asp I am partial to Seagate hard drives since they have 5 year warranties

Recommend Vantec Hard Drive Dock NST-D100UFS enclosure and Seagate 500 Gig 32 MB hard drive. The enclosure have USB 2.0, eSATA, Firewire. Works great and fast. I have the one without Firewire because it is not available at time of purchase. The enclosure takes both 2.5 and 3.5 size hard drive. http://www.vantecusa.com/product-storage.html.

Thanks for the reccomendations so far. I read that some enclosures keep the drive spinning constantly, causing it to eventually die. How do I know I’m getting an enclosure that will handle the drive properly?

Yeah, came across this a week or so ago, and immediately started drooling!

Unfortunately, it’s not yet available - or at least I can’t find it anywhere!
