Downloaded and installed the Firmware update. There were three. Didn't undersand why that would be the case, but I selected the most recent dated November. The drive firmware was AL02, now it's AL0H.
In Test mode tried a burn of a known VIDEO_TS file that I have burned before.
Proceeded as far as about 17% and got a Write Error.
I then proceeded through a number of steps in an attempt to try it again and experienced a number of different error conditions including Device Not Ready, No Media Present, etc. PC locked up and needed to reboot twice. Using Device Manager removed and installed device once.
