LiteOn XJ-HD165H doesn't recognise DVD rewritables

Hi, new here.

Problem I’m having is rewritable DVD’s not being recognised in my old LiteOn XJ-HD165H DVD Rom ( now JLMS XJ-HD165H as I changed the firmware a long time ago ) after recording old VHS footage or TV programmes to a new Toshiba DVD recorder .

I just bought the Toshiba D-R17DT DVD recorder which records and plays back with no problem on Maxell DVD-RW and Kodak DVD+RW.

Even after finalising the discs, the LiteOn comes up empty and says to insert a disc. DVD-R works fine though as do original movies. Do I need to change the firmware or simply bin the 165H? And what do you recommend that will easily read these discs? Thanks.

Just to add, nero info tool does show that my old LiteOn is meant to support all those formats.

Today I bought a LiteON DH-20A4P09C 8x to 20x DVD/CD writer for £30. I shall replace my CD writer with it as secondary master and keep the 165 in place. Hopefully this new writer should read my DVD RW’s!
Did I buy a decent machine?

Great forum.

Not one reply from anyone in two days. Is this place dead?

Sounds a descent writer. Just thinking the price was a little bit high.

That’s the price at pc world. No doubt could have bought cheaper online.

What do you think about my old DVD Rom? Why doesn’t it read DVD RW?

Standalones usually record in DVD-VR or DVD+VR format on dvd media.
Without an appropriate driver/software installed they cannot be read…
