I think he meant it like this…

EDIT:

Agh, the download link isn’t working now… was working earlier but I closed it to post this… :stuck_out_tongue: I wonder what this is also… hmm.

#5

Okay.
But can one of you please tell me what was in the file?

#6

i just downloaded it from the new link and it seems to be the eeprom and firmware bin for the new 812s drive i’ll investigate more

#7

looked at both files in hex workshop and the firmware bin file has the name SOHW-812S in it so could well be the new firmware the epprom file says sony corp in it so that to could be the new eep rom looks very intresting i see that where the dvd-r media is listed theres code c1 not sure what there there for im not a total expert on this so i could be wrong lets hope the boffins get ahold of this and can work out a answer for 811s owners to have a nice dvd-r x8 upgrade :iagree:

#8

You should use flashget or a similar download manager to get the file. The connection is really slow.

#9

Yeah, it’s the SOHW-812S firmware and EEPROM. The firmware is version US05 and is dated 2004/02/12 08:34

Don’t flash this onto your LDW-**1S drive.

#10

Indeed! Flashing this EEPROM onto any burner other then the 812S will probably destroy the drive.

Interesting none-the-less

Something like this…

#12

I asked because I was unable to download it at the time

Thanks though

That is just the bootcode loader. If you look here in the .bin file:

30120 00 00 4c 49 54 45 2d 4f 4e 20 44 56 44 52 57 20 ..LITE-ON DVDRW
30130 53 4f 48 57 2d 38 31 32 53 20 55 53 30 35 32 30 SOHW-812S US0520
30140 30 34 2f 30 32 2f 31 32 20 30 38 3a 33 34 20 20 04/02/12 08:34

you will see that Dave is the one who can read

Thanks ala42

Yes, first comes the bootcode ID, then comes the actual firmware version and drive ID. If you ever see that your drive has firmware version US0* after flashing, this means that the drive was misflashed and is running on the bootcode only. This lets you recover the drive by running the official flasher again. If you misflash while flashing the bootcode then the drive wont be recoverable from Windows, only with mtkflash in DOS.

I´m sure he can.

But, that was not my point…
I´m just curious if there is any earlier (“812”) firmware floating around…

I came across this 451s@851s@812s. Too good to be true? Haven’t tried it.

#18

Geeezz…

What do you say about this ‘gentlemen’.

EDIT: editorial changes

#19

Well since someone else has also figured this out I will say yes it can be done, but only for x51 drives. If you have a x11 drive you are out of luck at this time. That may change but not quickly. I have not tried this flasher but have downloaded it and will take a look.

#20

Well.
This is getting very interesting VERY fast!

Everyone be very careful, we don’t want people’s drives dying on us. Obviously this is very new.
Make dang sure you are aware of any risks and can afford to lose the drive before trying it out.
