I hope this is the correct place to discuss the Sony BWU-500S. It’s (more or less) an iHBS112 clone and I couldn’t find a separate thread.

It’s also a surprisingly good CD writer (for a Lite-On).
I hope this is the correct place to discuss the Sony BWU-500S.
As good a place as any.

I think a few folks have made note of that. Not sure if it was specifically in this thread, but I remember seeing some good CD scans. :iagree:

The CD-R results in Vroom’s iHBS112 review were pretty bad, so I was expecting the worst. Nice to be pleasantly surprised for a change.

BD-RE results are satisfactory as well.

Apart from bus encryption, is there much difference between the 1.66 & 2.63 firmwares? (The timestamp on the 1.66 file is actually 2 days later than 2.63.)

Unless there is a compelling reason to use 2.63 I’m inclined to stick with 1.66, it’s nice being able to scan at full speed with only a single click.

The same goes for crossflashing. Normally I would as a matter of principal, but given how hard it was to find one of these drives I’m reluctant to take unnesscesary risks.

Ibex, Bus Encryption is not an entirely firmware feature  Drive without bus encryption can be flashed with 2nd generation firmwares (made for drives with bus encryption) and will work fine with them, but bus encryption will not appear.

Thanks for the information. :flower:

Does anyone know if downgrading from 2.63 to 1.66 is possible? (on a 1st generation drive.)

I see that downgrading the Lite-On firmware is not straightforward. Presumably the Sony firmware has the same obstacles to overcome?

Sorry if I haven’t been searching for answers as thoroughly as I should. :o I’m having a bit of difficulty with my vision these days.

#1068

Ibex, yes, the downgrading is possible on 1st generation drives with “unlocked flasher method”. I can provide a BIN file of 1.66, if necessary.

#1069

Thanks again. :flower: It’s reassuring to know there is a route back.

Note to self: Remember to backup old firmware before updating! :iagree:
