LiteOn DVD / Optowrite CD trouble

I am having problems with both my LiteOn DVD Writer/Combo Drive and my Optowrite CD Writer drive.

The DVD drive will not recognise any CD media but will burn DVD’s no problem.
The CD drive identifies CD-R media as CD-RW using Sonic RecordNow and using Nero 7 I get power calibration errors when trying to write to a CD in this drive.

The CD-R media I am attempting to use from a 100 cake eProformance container that the first 30 or so had no problems being written to !!

Hi,

Then possibly the part responsive for CD burning is dead.

The CD drive identifies CD-R media as CD-RW using Sonic RecordNow and using Nero 7 I get power calibration errors when trying to write to a CD in this drive.
These Optorites aren’t the best CD writers. I have a MSI OEM Optorite shelved. That beast managed to kill top quality Taiyo Yuden CD-R. :Z

The CD-R media I am attempting to use from a 100 cake eProformance container that the first 30 or so had no problems being written to !!
That does not sound like quality media. Can you post the output of “disc info” tab in Nero CD/DVD Speed?

It is not impossible that you installed some virus-like DRM crap, so check in safe mode or better try the drives in another computer. In addition, uninstall virtual disc software (Alcohol, Daemon Tools or similar) and packet writing software (InCD etc.) in order to avoid conflicts.

Michael

As requested the “disc info” from Nero:

Stuart

Ouch!
Apparently your drive does not support this type of media. Are the other discs, that worked for you of the same MID (Yes, you can also insert a already written disc)?
At least try other media and see if that works.

Michael

I have no problems reading a back up data disc done with the same media about 5 months ago.

I can burn to this media using the dvd/combo writer in a dell laptop with no issues.
I will try and install the drives into a different pc and post back my results.

I just pulled that old MSI off the shelf. Indeed, I crossflashed this to Optorite CW5201 220E.
After having killed another TY disc :a (buffer underrun :a what the heck…) the next worked. Disc was written @16x.

I have installed both the drives in my old Windows 98 PC with exactly the same results.
So It looks both my drives have gone to the great burner in hell!
As a final resort I will try some other media to see if it makes any difference.
Thanks for all the help.

Stuart

Hi,
try only one drive. There is chance, that only one drive is damaged and that blocks the other one. So disconnect the other one totally.

Michael

Hi Michael,

Unfortunately I have now tried both drives seperately and still get the same results !!
As the LiteOn DVD burner is burning DVD’s ok (just family camcorder footage etc) would I be better getting a CD writer replacement drive or going for a different DVD/CD combo writer. CD write function is used mainly to create audio discs from music collection on hard drive.

Stuart

Hi,

Okay. Then there is time for a new drive.

As the LiteOn DVD burner is burning DVD’s ok (just family camcorder footage etc) would I be better getting a CD writer replacement drive or going for a different DVD/CD combo writer. CD write function is used mainly to create audio discs from music collection on hard drive.

As your Litey is rather old (Yeah, 2 Years old hardware is considered ancient in these days) and will not support newer media, I would suggest getting a new DVD writer, that is also good with CD media.

My recommendation would be the Benq DW 1650 or 1655 or their Philips branded brothers 1660P1/1668P1, depending on local price and availability. I own a Benq DW1650, and I am very happy with it, especially with its very good CD-R quality (But it does DVD media very well, too).
