Have you tried booting from a CD?
Maybe the lens needs cleaning?
When you say it won't read CDs, is that pressed CDs, burned CDs, or both?
Also, it may help if you tell us what model your burner is...
how can i boot from a cd if the cd (any CD) will not load. anyway what does "boot from a cd mean"?liteon dvdrw shw 1635s
What Arachne means is that you put your bootable Windows XP disc in the 1635 & restart firstly setting the boot sequence in the bios to be CD-ROM & then HD0. This way there are no drivers etc installed & it'll just be a case of the PC try to read the CD.
In reality it probably means that the CD laser in the 1635 has failed as there are 2 separate parts to the device , one that handles CDs the other handling DVDs.
how can i do that? my liteon will not load any cd's..........ANY!!!.....just dvd'sWe are not talking autoplay or anything else
I have had a drive do the same thing to me. The half of the laser that reads CD's has failed. The reason people are talking about Booting from a CD, is to fiqure out if this could be a windows problem. There could be a conflict some where keeping you from reading or writing to a CD, But youre laser is probably bad.
thx i understand but why give me a fix that i can't use?
The whole point of what we're suggesting about booting from a CD is to try & determine whether the problem is caused by the windows operating system or is an actual failure of your 1635.
When you boot from a CD then there is nothing interfering with the drive & it's just the computer basics trying to read the disc.
If booting like this fails to read the CD then your 1635 is toast as far as CDs are concerned & needs replacing.
that is the whole problem....that is what i am telling u............THE DRIVE WILL NOT LOAD ANY CD.....WILL NOT READ ANY CD......and WILL NOT load, readand copy FROM ANY SOFTWARE CD......only DVD's
if there is a problem with XP and it will not load/read the disc, say a boot disc .......or there is a problem with the drive and it will not load/read the disc.......how does that help....im lost.....i will take it to a tech!
A boot disc is not read by Windows but on bios level. If that fails, than there is only one solution left: RMA the drive. Hope your next drive last longer.
Read again Leo and Tim's explanations....if it doesn't boot from a CD, looks like it's new drive time, as far as CDs go.
All we're trying to do is determine where the problem lies. Sometimes a drive is perfectly fine but Windows won't read CDs and/or DVDs. This could be the case with yours which is why we keeping suggesting booting from a CD as this is nothing to do with Windows.
If you can't be bothered trying our advice why should we be bothered trying to help.
