LiteOn Combo LTC-48161H CD-R reading problems

Hi,

I have just bought a LiteOn Combo drive and it seems to have some problems with reading some of my CD-Rs.

I have tried updating the firmware to KH0P, but it did not improve the problem.

Whenever I insert one of my CD-Rs, it either takes ages to recognize it and read at really slow speeds or does not recognize the CD-R at all. It also ignores my blank media and prompts me to insert the media to write on, after reading for a while from the disc.

The LiteOn FAQ mentions “Don’t use crap discs.” Does that apply to reading as well?

This is what Nero CD Speed tells me when I try to do a speed test on the disc. Here is the disc info :

Manufacturer : Multi Media Masters & Machinary [sic]
Code : 97m28s22f
Usage : General
Recording Layer : Dye Type 2: Long Strategy(Cyanine, AZO)

This is on Windows 2000 SP4, without CloneCD or EasyCD Creator installed.

What should I do? The drive is brand new. Should I exchange it for another?

Hi and welcome

Try with another CD-R disc of better quality, like:

Taiyo Yuden
Mitsubishi
Fujifilm (made in Germany ones)
Ritek

See if that improves the situations then it’s just due to your crap quality CD-R discs (yes, they are low quality).

Hi and welcome.
I ask you a favor, if you have a dvd (-R or +R, don’t care) written with an any dvd-writer LiteON tries to make the test with Nero CD/DVD speed to see if it jams for reading errors.
I have this problem (only with dvd written from whatever LiteON) and I don’t understand if is a problem of my Combo or all Combo.
I have send an e-mail to LiteON with enclosures the tests but they have given me an answer that doesn’t have some sense! Have told me that the test cannot do because don’t have the disk as mine!! Unbelievable.
Thank’s.

It seems to work on some old Kodak CD-Rs I had laying around. So I should ditch the cheap media, right?

Anyway, it’s probably for the better. At least my data will be safer. Thanks!

I have a DVD-R(or +R, don’t know really) burnt by a friend, but it wasn’t on burnt on a LiteON combo drive(Sony DRU-500A IIRC). Do you still want the results?

that error that i mentioned with the -r media is now not able to be overcome with the +r media

several discs of different mfgr
as long as it is not bookmarked it will not test.

HOWEVER
all of the discs will play just fine in the 48161 so not sure how much difference this makes.

ps looks like others have had similar problems

someone else

Here is the error and suggested resolutions

i have another 48161 sitting in a box as wheni had it rma’d i put an 811s in with my 411s in my burning rig

so i suppose i could throw it in if there is some dire need to do this.

pm me if you want me to do it but you will owe me bigtime

Thank’s for all information.
Now i understand is not only a problem of my combo.
My settings are OK. All drive works in DMA mode.
Then I don’t understand from where the problem comes.
