Lite-On DVDRW SOHW-1693S Read Problem

Hello all,
I’ve found many pieces of interesting and useful advice on this forum so I thought I might be able to get some help on this issue of mine here.

Two days ago I bought a brand new Lite-On DVDRW SOHW-1693S at the local store and plugged it into my pc. But when I inserted the Nero-CD that came with the drive, my OS (Win XP Pro SP2) gave an error (the ’ do you want to send an error report?’-thing) and wouldn’t read the CD.

Initially, I thought it might be the CD, so I tried a few other ones. And here is where the strange thing is: some of the CDs acted the same way as the Nero CD (couldn’t be read and gave error) but some functioned normally.

But on my old DVD-ROM drive every single one of the CDs worked properly (I tested it).

So, I got the DVDRW drive swapped at the store yesterday but same thing happened - it could play some CDs and some it wouldn’t read (the same ones as before). But this time, OS gave no error, I just inserted a CD and the drive kept buzzing like crazy but I was still unable to acces the CDs. Other media like music CDs, some data CDs and DVDs seem to work alright.

I’ve updated it to the newest firmware version for the drive, but that didn’t help. Also installed ASPI 4.60 (dunno what it does, but read somewhere it might help) but this haven’t changed anything either.

What could possibly be the error? How can I correct it?

If I need to post any details about my system or anything just say so.

Thanks a bunch…
KM

Maybe is better to post other detail about your system, and also details about media that give you problems.

When I run Nero CD-DVD Speed test on one of the discs that the drive wont read it gives this message:
Error!
LOGICAL UNIT COMMUNICATION CRC ERROR (ULTRA-DMA/32) (040803)

On other some other discs it just says ‘no disc inserted’ (And these are discs that I am sure work, 'cause I can run them on my standard DVD-ROM drive)

Just tried burning an image of one of the CDs that does work, using Alcohol 120%, but all it did was give a million read errors and never finish.

Any ideas??

@ Anomander Rake
Here’s what Nero has to say about that error. Here’s what the forum FAQs has to say.
I’d try an 80-wire IDE cable first. Make sure all your connections are tight.

#6

Thanks a lot - seems to be useful, I’ll try it out.

#7

I have tested back and forth now, and have finally given up - Lite-on goes back to the store. Today i received an NEC DVD-RW ND-3520A and everything works perfectly… So the problem remains a mystery.

#8

Interesting Just Got This Error With My New SHW-1635S.
I Only Seem To Get This Error If The Drive Is In One Of My Older PC’s Using A KT400 Chipset.

I’ll Try And Find Out Why, Because I Like It To Be In That PC.

#9

Fixed It.

Just Replaced The 80-Wire IDE Cable.

#10

I have the very same concern has all of you! Going to try the 80 IDE Cable first… does anyone have the phone number for LITEONIT to confirm if the IDE cable doesn’t work??

Thanks,
Jay Happy Holidays!!!
Newbie…please forgive me!

I am working with an Alienware 7700 notebook, not a desktop. I picked up a new Pioneer DVR-K05 slot-in drive and I am getting the same error.

Mainly having trouble while burning CD’s. Nero and iTunes are giving me all sorts of problems. The overall drive performance on this drive (ripping/burning) are way below that of the crappier Matshita/Panasonic Drive that came with this Alienware 7700 (They are both installed).

Performance settings are crancked on the laptop. Drive does not have any newer Firmware updates available (1.03 are the latest). Drivers/Bios on my Laptop are up to date…

Hardware settings are set to DMA. There is one set of DMA settings that aren’t but I am not sure how to change them, (see below).

Have tried various kinds of media for burning.

If you have any suggestions I would appreciate it.

The last failed audio CD burn had error code 4300(0x000010cc). It happened on drive F: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K05 on CDR media at speed 4X.

I have fixed the communication issue by:

  1. Remove all drives from the laptop.
  2. Re-Install New drive (Pio DVR-K05) on top slot.
  3. Reboot.
  4. Pio drive is now the master and burns properly.
  5. Shutdown and install original drive on the lower slot.
  6. Update ASPI drivers.
  7. Success. Both Drives burn, but the famous and hyped Pioneer is performing shamefully.

Any help you can provide me with would be appreciated. This is the current status with the drive as seen by Nero’s Advanced DAE test:
