Lite-On DH-20A4H and Nero verification

My Lite-On Dh-20A4H has been driving me nuts when performing Nero Verification after burning DVDs. I don’t know if this is how this model behaves, but my previous Lite-On spun up the disc during file verification, and didn’t slow down or stop until it was done. This model, which is less than 2 months old, acts very strangely. It will spin up, approaching 6x-9x, then within 30 seconds, it will slow down to 2-3x, and become very quiet. Then it will start to speed up again, becoming very, very loud, back up to 6x-9x again, then back down to 2-3x, and this will repeat throughout the entire disc verification.

Does anybody else have this model? Is this normally how this one is? Currently, the verification process takes condsiderably longer than burning. Could Nero be responsible? But I’ve been using Nero 7 all along, even when I had the other drive. This has been doing this since the first day I ran it. The firmware is the latest from Lite-On. Thanks in advance for any input.

As an update, I was just sitting here verifying a dvd, when suddenly the computer froze. I had to turn it off cold and restart it, then I took the disc out, and I never saw anything like it. There were several different rings, like it had stopped during burning, and continued again somewhere else on the disc. But burning had been completed, and it had moved on to verification. Only a third of the disc was burned, and this was supposed to be a full disc. Also, when you look at the disc, there is a “notch” of unburned material in one of the rings, just fading out, like if you could just take a cloth and rub the rings out.

When the computer restarted, it said “found new hardware”, and the hardware may not function properly if I do not restart. So I restarted again, and now it seems to be burning again, but I no longer trust this drive. It is brand new from Newegg (OEM). I guess I have to buy a new drive now, as I’m just starting to build my new computer this week, and I do not want this drive in there now, it’s acting too flaky.

@ gwent,

Perchance are you aware that CD Freaks has a dedicated Lite-On DVD Burner Forum (http://club.cdfreaks.com/f44/) where you might be more successful in obtaining assistance with your Lite-On DH-20A4H Drive problem.

Perchance have you tried CodeKing’s ‘Enhanced Hyper Tuning’ (http://club.cdfreaks.com/f44/liteon-dh20a4p-h-fast-burn-enhanced-overspeed-enhanced-oht-firmware-231875/?referrerid=65105) patched Lite-On DH-20A4H Firmware which improves better Burn quality.

What is the MID (Manufacture ID and Media Code) (Example: TYG02) of the particular Media you are using. To obtain the MID (Manufacture ID and Media Code) (Example: TYG02) suggest using a software utility program similar to DVDInfo (http://www.dvdinfopro.com).

The Mid is Verbatim MCC 004, which is usually the only type I use. I usually burn my media at 8x. I haven’t tried the patched firmware. Does it provide enhanced burning at all speeds, or only at higher speeds? I’m still not sure why the drive would suddenly just disable itself during a burn, so that Windows “discovers” it again upon restart.

Thanks for the reply.

@ gwent,

Perhaps reading the referenced (http://club.cdfreaks.com/f44/liteon-dh20a4p-h-fast-burn-enhanced-overspeed-enhanced-oht-firmware-231875/?referrerid=65105) thread would provide the answer to your question.
