Lite-on 411s, switch brands? upgrade?

Hello, new to this forum!

i have a liteon 411s and ive burned about 200 dvd +r’s mostly fuji 4x disks. i use dvd xcopy and everything has been great. recently my disks have been freezing towards the end of movies. ive heard that its the media or slow down the burn speed etc. but that shouldnt matter, they have worked for 200 dvds before and now all of a sudden the media is crap or im burning to fast. i think the latest firmware i have is FSOH, because i never had a reason to upgrade. pretty much all the dvds i burned are compressed by dvdxcopy to 4.34GB, which means that it burns to the edge of the dvd, which never was a problem before. my question is this… is the liteon drive showing its age and time for a new one? or should i put new firmware on it? or should i try another brand, i heard NEC and pioneer are great. can anyone offer any direction, id like to hear your input!! thanks!

This might be a bad batch or a new batch with different media codes. Check the media codes of the good and bad disks using DVDIdentifier. Also posts scans using KProbe 2.4.2 or cdspeed and 4x scan speed.

Just got myself the OEM of BENQ 1620 so far my Liteons can’t live with it.
Awesome drive.

I bought an 812s to replace my 411@811 because it was easy to find at Wal-Mart (no shipping, good price, saw it in the store & had to go home with it that same night -too easy to pass up!).
The 812 is nothing like the previous drive which gave me trouble as a 411 then as a 411@811 as well (only upgraded to 811 because of problems).
Apparently the 411 / 811 are just bad drives & the newer 812/832 are much better. I can burn most +R with near perfect results at 8X all of the time.
I was going to go with NEC after having so many problems with the 411@811 but like I said, I came across a 812 at Wal-Mart and went with it. I’m glad I did although I’m sure an NEV would be nice too.
Try an 812 from your local Wal-Mart & return it if you do not like it and then order something else (NEC) from New Egg if you must.
