I just upgraded to XP and it has screwed my CD-RW drive up! I tried to install some of my games, but the drive either stalls during installation and crashes or crashes before I can even get the chance to install. When the drive “crashes” it is no longer available i.e I can’t find it any where on the pc, windows ins’t recognizin it. But when I restart the machine it appears again, until I try to use it again!

Any help would be grateful.

#2

Try uninstalling the drive and then rebooting.
Also try updating your IDE drivers.

#3

tried that already, didn’t work. Also flashed it 5s5A still didnt work!

#4

Perhaps a faulty ASPI layer?

Check you ASPI layer with aspichk.
The layer should look something like this if it’s working right:

If something doesn’t look like the above, fix (force) your ASPI layer to 4.60 with this. Make a backup copy first incase you want to go back.

#5

The ASPI wasn’t even installed! I installed it like you said and all the versions are the same but the problem still persists! But it does say that there are two host adapters detected! thanks for all your help so far, any more ideas?

#6

Do you have two drives?

#7

try reading in dos. boot to your xp cd and run recovery console.
Here are instructions

test it out and see if it can read files.

create a bootable floppy and boot to it and then do a dir . /as
to directory all files and see if you can read them all

shutdown and reseat all connections on that ide chain or replace the cable.

good luck!

#8

Just the one cd drive, i’ll try that later cnlson gotta go to work now.

#9

To see if it’s a software conflict, uninstall all CD/DVD related programs.

#10

It doesn’t seem to be a software problem, I unistalled all the programs and its still not working.

#11

Have you moved it around inside the PC? i.e. Was it secondary master and you moved it to primary slave etc?

Try using Microsoft default IDE drivers (date should be 2001).

back from work yet? if so what were the results? if you have problems booting to or accessing the drive in dos that will tell you whether you have OS problems or Drive problems.

at that point more advice will follow…

either buy a new drive or perhaps some registry, driver or other item to get it to work in windows.

We know you have a hard time… working for days.

Here you have some more ideas;
-uninstall any virtual drive.
-remove any pocket writing program, like InCD, DLA, aso.
-check your configuration with Nero Info tool.
-flash the drive with firmvare 5S59 or earlier, using this tool.

BTW, now I have to go to work…
