LH-20A1L riplock removal?

I recently got this drive and, woe is me I realized I’m hobbled when ripping DVDs to about 4x. I’ve scoured the web and I think that no firmware exists to remove riplock. Any advice?

I’m not really sure about the 20A1L but my 20A1S rips faster than anything else
that I have. It is much faster than either my 160P6S, 20A1P, or the 166S DVD drive
I don’t know of any firmware that exists to remove rip-lock from Liteon drives because
I’ve never seen a Liteon drive that was rip-locked before.

Welcome to cdfreaks Spiffypants.

Ripspeed, especially movies doesn’t depend that much on your drives reading capability as on the rest of your compu (software and hardware).

Please tell us more in details about your hardware and programs used for ripping.

BTW getit29, also check out this thread.

OK, my system specs:
Western Digital Caviar 500GB SATA
PNY GeForce 8500GT 512MB GDDR2
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ Windsor 2.4GHz Socket AM2
BIOSTAR TForce TF7025-M2 Socket AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 7025 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
LITE-ON 20X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe Black SATA Model LH-20A1L-05
HT OMEGA CLARO 7.1 Channels PCI Interface Sound Card
1GB G.SKILL Extreme Series 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 533 (PC2 4200)

I’ve used DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter and Nero to rip. They all start out at about 3MBps and peak at about 12.

Here’s a screenshot of the Nero Benchmark test, if it’s relevant. I tested it with American Psycho DVD.

What you see in that scan you posted is actually normal behavior. There is always a slow down into the second layer. If the drive had riplock it would never even reach 12x to begin with.

If your interested to see the difference yourself, you can look at an LG drive review (Reading performance section) from here because as far as I know all LGs have it, you’ll be able to easily tell the difference.

I hope this helps.

Yeah my old 1693S was a good ripper also at the time, but the 20A1S I’m using now still beats it overall.

Did you try to set the Drive speed using Nero Drive speed that seemed to help the speed of my rips with this drive.
