LG H55N burning DVD problem

hi i am a newbie so sorry if my question sounds stupid i just bought a lg h55n dvdrw but i have a problem this drive doesn’t burn under dma i mean when i turn dma mode on nero hangs on 1% and nothing happens but when i turn pio on it works but very slow @8X it takes about 35 min to burn a verbatim dvd.i am so sick and tired and have no clue to what to do i forgot to say that i went to warranty and changed this drive 3 times but all 3 of them have the same problem so if anyone can help i’ll appriciate it sorry if this is not the place to ask this kinda question.

i tried burning with imageburn but no success i tried burning cds actually it was ok and successful tried maxell dvd-r lg dvd-r verbatim dvd-r no success
and also when i abort burning proccess burner starts to burn and then aborts burning so result media will be corrupted i already asked this question in h55 section and no answer was provided doea anyone know anything about it please tell if you know something that may help i will appreciate it.

Tried that but it didn’t work i am so frustrated and do’t know exactly what to do please if anybody knows something please share.

Unfortunately I’m not familiar with this particular problem, so I would approach it logically and by the process of elimination. You’ve already eliminated the drive as a problem with 3 drive swaps all doing the same thing.

So … something is wrong with the computer configuration. My H55L really only likes UDMA 4 to operate at its best speeds. Its alone on the secondary IDE Master.

You turn off DMA and you get the standard snail write speed. You turn it on and it hangs the Write process. Logically that indicates there is something wrong with addressing that Port in DMA.

You have a lot of ports and devices with DMA off here. Its not impossible for a PC to get confused with certain types of chipsets and configurations, they are far from fool proof.

In the interest of the process of elimination, I would unplug all devices except the Hard drive on one port DMA on, and the H55N on another port DMA on, one on ID 0 and the H55 on ID 1 so that the computer can only see two devices both in DMA. Then try writing a Blank DVD.

Are you trying to Multi-session a -R. You can’t do that; only +R/RW or DVD-RAM. I don’t like the look of this either:

I don’t know the details about this Sense Key so its just an observation.

the devices you metioned were actually virtual devices i uninstalled them then tried to burn a dvd-r with image burn no success below is the log:

Yes, it still can’t access that port in DMA. This is extremely important!

You still have both drives on [U]ID 0 .[/U] In several occasions I’ve seen that they must be on different ID channels. Put the Master Hard drive on ID 0, put the H55 on Master ID 1. And it never hurts to make sure you are using 80 cable flat connector cables.

Are you using a blank disc?

Try using [B][U]simulate mode[/U][/B] with the Nero CD-Speed test tool and a blank disk. This way it won’t blow the disk but should give you an indication of the burn process and how it will work. You’ll use the ceate data disk function.

How long did you wait before you aborted ?? Was anything showing on the H55 drive light ??

To find the solution to a problem like this can be very tricky because it requires shifting things around and experimenting. No optical Drive is a universal success when installed.

Uninstall the IDE controller (storage controller) from device manager under IDE/ATAPI and have windows pick it up again straight after or on a reboot.

First though check you bios and make sure UDMA is set to AUTO for PRIMARY and SECONDARY and any other places it shows up

@DLW my mainboard has two IDE chips 4 connectors 1 chip is ATA 100 and the other one is a PROMISE chip for raid and etc when i put h55n on the promise chip nero gives an error and exits before even starting up so i can’t put them on different chips and my h55n led flashes when in lead in procces about 30 seconds then led turns off and nothing happens my dvd-r is verbatim and yes they are empty and my h55n is connected to a 80 pin cable and i aborted the burning procces after 4 minutes when nothing happened.

OK on the LED, that is a stall or failure of some kind. I’ve had it do something like that when trying to read a DVD-Video (but thats another story) . I’ve never used Athlon boards so I’m not too familiar with their IDE interfaces. You have two (Nice for Raid), I have only one with two channels on this Intel chipset. If you have an AtA100 IDE chip you should have two channels on it. Usually Identified as IDE-0 and IDE-1 (Primary and Secondary). This is where your H55 must be, not on the other chip. In most configs the Hard-drive is on IDE-0 Master, thinking in terms of Intel boards. Optical drives are then put on IDE-1 Master.

Do you have two channels on the ATA100 chip ?? (assuming 1 & 2 of four total)

Now this is disregarding the Raid Promise chip.

AS dontasciime mentioned, does your Bios give options for UDMA on some or all of your IDE channels ??

@DLW yes my mobo has two channels on ata 100 chip and my HDD is on the IDE0 and h55n is on the IDE1 and my BIOS has only 1 setting for IDE channels whis has 3 options no.1 ata 33(40pin cable) no.2 ata66,100,133 (80 pin cable) no.3 auto

And the cable is what ? 40 or 80. And the Bios setting is what? Set it for the [U]actual cable size[/U]. (You can count the wires to be sure)

40 won’t get you there; not all the way.

After that is set, follow what dontasciime said above; Uninstall the IDE controller (storage controller) from device manager under IDE/ATAPI and have windows pick it up again straight after or on a [U]reboot[/U]. It will automatically reload and configure the Controller Via PnP protocols.

my cable is 80 pin i tried option no.2 and no.3 they didn’t work and i uninstalled ide controllers but still no success by the way i noticed something during boot proccess before winxp boots where it lists devices it says “secondary master pio mode 4” but in winxp device manager secondary master is “multiword dma 2” my h55n is on secondary master is it ok or not?

If you have 80 wire flat cable on both IDE Channels (Sometimes there will be 80 wires on the Primary and 40 wires on the Secondary) If your sure its the secondary wire cable your looking at, and it is 80 flat and your set on the end as Master, then that would be the correct configuration.

My Bios boot configuration screen also shows the PIO modes for all drives and to the right it also shows the UDMA mode for all drives. So it reports PIO-4 for all Drives and UDMA-5 for the two Hard drives and UDMA-4 for the H55L on the Secondary channel. With my Mobo which uses 845PE Intel Chipset, its operating with the Intel App Accelerator, and that application installed in Windows, runs during the low level boot process. Otherwise Windows will set and control the DMA mode which is not the case on my computer. So it would seem Windows set your DMA-2 on the OS boot which seems normal to me.

So at this point I’m perplexed as to why you can’t write in DMA mode on the Secondary Master. Does anything Read and Write in DMA on the Secondary Master !? OK so its starting to make me wonder if there is a compatability problem with the H55 Panasonic chipset and firmware and the DMA in your chipset. 3 Drives all doing the same thing !!

Do you have any other Brand DVD writer you can test in place of the H55 ??
If not, plug the Hard drive in the secondary master and see if it will boot and run normal speed. Leave the H55 unplugged.

I assume you have the Hard drive on the primary master and the H55 on the secondary master and when you try to burn in DMA, it just hangs the write; am I correct ?? And I assume the Device Manager shows DMA-2 for both; correct ??
Are you using the Nero CDSpeed create data in simulate mode; or does this corrupt a new blank disk every time you try it. Do you have any +R/RW disks and/or DVD-RAM disks ??

One other thing. Can you disable the Raid Promise chip in Bios or Device manager ?? This way running only the ATA100 IDE.

@DLW today i brought a nec dvd writer 3520(i am not sure about the model number) from my office and took my h55n to my office i mean i swapped them nec drive from office worked although slow on my home pc and h55n worked on my office pc then i came home i formatted my hard drive and reinstalled winxp and disabled the raid(promise chip) but my h55n didn’t work tonight i am going to do what you said (chinging hdd to ide1 and h55n to ide0 )to see what happens and i will report it tommorow i am not using nero to simulate the burn procces this are real burns with blank dvd-rs and about my device manager it shows “multiword dma mode 2” is it equal to DMA2 or not?and durnig boot procces it shows pio4 and finally i have a dvdrw and i am going to test it tomorrowand report back to you and about 80 wire i think the cables are 80 wire cause i have an old 40wire cable and these cables that i am using now have more wires so i assume they are 80 wire correct?and by the way thank for your replies.

DMA is all multiword now, they don’t use single word anymore. DMA1 is about 13.3 MBs and DMA2 is 16.7 MBs. But this is still a far cry from UDMA. The H55 is an Ultra ATA drive and will run nicely at UDMA 4 which is 66.7 MBs. [B]Some Ultra ATA Drives, both Hard and Optical don’t like older boards and some chipsets and will automatically gear down to PIO-4 or lock up or send error messages.[/B] If you have any UDMA settings in Bios make sure they’re turned on. Sometimes a Bios upgrade needs to done to enable or make the board compatible with UDMA Drives. I don’t know anything about your Mobo but you should be using UDMA with the H55. If you have a “Bus Mastering” switch in Bios setup check its status and turn it on; If its on then try turning it off. Check your Mobo manual and find out if it will run in UDMA; it would specify something like “2/4 channel Ultra ATA/100 Bus Master IDE controller” . The boot bios config screen should show the UDMA mode for all drives if its capable of running UDMA. You would need to have a Controller capable of UDMA on the Mobo, if not, you’d have to use IDE/ATA interface card. UDMA has to be set in either the Bios or the OS. You should be able to confirm that UDMA is on for any channel. Unless your running an older board we should be talking UDMA not DMA 1 or 2.

What I’m wondering is if the H55 doesn’t like the DMA2 on your chipset. DMA2 should give you reasonable performance over PIO which takes you 35 minutes to burn a disc but there could still be a problem even if DMA is available on the IDE channel. DMA2 has about the same Transfer rate PIO-4 but PIO causes a lot of CPU overhead which can slow things down a lot.

I think its a good idea to use RW discs. Just get a good quality one (fastest speed) for all this testing. If you get a DVD RW up to its max speed then its likely you solved the problem.

The 40 and 80 do look different. You get up close and you can get a rough count using a fingernail. The thing here is, again, UDMA will automatically drop to UDMA 2 if your on a 40 cable. Bios will do it. DMA 1 or 2 is not fast enough to require the extra ground lead between the 40 data wires. I’ve run the H55 on a 40 cable but I could not get better than UDMA 2.
