Hi.

I’m using windows Xp with sp2; TDK dvd-r’s, a105 firmware, nero 7 premium.

I wanted to copy a film dvd for a friend (first made an image of it on the drive) and I got 4 coasters in a row. The DVD-writer used to work fine till this error.

Exact-Audio-Copy has a great system for verification; it checks the original data with the burn data and corrects it on the fly if there’s a problem. Nero verifies after the burn and if it fails the dvd is lost. Is there such software that verifies on the fly (for things other than audio, as I’m using EAC for audio anyway)?

I’ve got the dma enabled. The LG dvd-ram is the secondary master, with a cd-writer/dvd-rom combo being the secondary slave.

I thought maybe it’s the image file that caused the problem, but then a data dvd attempt also failed.

Please help me… What might be the problem?

You need to find out if it is the drive, the software, or the media. TDK is rather variable.

The first thing to do is download CloneDVD and see if you still have problems. Then you need to get a different brand of disc and see what happens there.

After that you might try going to A103 just to see if anything changes. I found A103 works better for some -R media.

I assume you are burning at 8X.

It does sound as if it might be the media.

Those error messages are usually indicative of defective media. It essentially means that the writer could not read back a data successfully from a certain part of the disc, and so it could not compare the data burned with the original copy on hard drive.

I’ve used TDK 8x DVD-R discs (TTG02) myself on my 4163B and I have a few coasters to show for it. I’ve gone through two batches and the quality varies quite wildly. The first batch had nearly 4 out of 10 coasters. The rest of the discs burned with extremely low PIF levels but erratically high PIE levels from disc to disc. Not one disc was consistent. The second batch produced no coasters and PIE levels were consistent and much lower. However, PIF levels were much higher than the first batch, especially for the first few hundred MBs of the disc. I confirmed this by burning those discs from the second batch on two other burners (4167B and BenQ DW-1640) and I got the same results. Either way, inconsistent media.

I’d change discs to something decent and see if that fixes things.

Just my experience here - my 4163 (can’t remember the firmware at the time) didn’t like TTG02 either. Coasters each time I used one (I think I had about 3 of them).

As suggested, try a different brand of disc?

Such a verify option is no good proof for either good or bad burn.

A test using Nero CD DVD Speed would give a more useful result.
