A friend of mine gave me two SATA DVDRW drives:
LG GSA-H30N
Samsung TS-H653(B)

Both of them were taken from two Dell Dimension E520.
Which one should i keep?

Thank you.

The first has a riplock. The second also does but you can remove it with patched firmware. Not so with the LG.

Actually yeah go with the Samsung. It’s a newer drive.

Thanx a lot Mangix. I will keep the Samsung then.
Could you please recommand me a firmware to remove the riplock? I just flashed it yesterday with the latest firmware (D400), but i don’t think it was patched. How can i see if Samsung has riplock in this moment?
Thank you.

Firmwares for these drives can be patched using the Samsung Patch Utility:
http://club.myce.com/f105/patch-utility-samsung-mtk-based-dvd-writers-v3-4-10-a-242508/ (see the first posts in the thread for instructions).

It is also possible to OEM crossflash your drive to its retail equivalent (the SH-S203B) if you want (using the -NOCHECK trick). The latest retail firmware is SB04.

You can find plenty of useful stuff in the Samsung FAQ thread: http://club.myce.com/f105/mini-faq-samsung-dvd-writers-220607/

SH-S203B/TS-H653B drives were very well regarded at the time, so keeping this drive rather than the LG was a good choice.

CVS, i can croshhflash Samsung TS-H653(B) to SH-S203B simply by flash it with this firmware?

If yes, after i crossflash with SB04, i only must flash it with a pached firmware? it’s a little hard for me, since i didn’t use optical drives in the last 5 years, so any step by step advice would be great.
thanks

Yes you can crossflash by simply flashing SB04.

Download a copy of SB4. Use 7-zip or WinRar to extract the *.bin file from the Samsung *.exe firmware update package that you just downloaded.

Use the Patch Utility to patch this *.bin file.

Download either the sfdnwin.exe or better still the newer tsdnwin.exe standalone flasher and run it in NOCHECK mode (this is important, because otherwise it won’t let you crossflash). What you need to do is to run ‘sfdnwin.exe -NOCHECK’ or run ‘tsdnwin.exe -NOCHECK’ from the command line/prompt. Obviously for this to work you need to set the correct patch to the folder where the flasher is.

If you see the NOCHECK message displayed when the standalone flasher opens then you’re ready to go. Just load the patched binary firmware, select your TS-H653B drive and then flash the firmware. That’s it … crossflash done and patched too, all in one go.

You can find links for the standalone flashers and more detailed flashing instructions here: http://club.myce.com/f105/howto-flash-firmware-samsung-dvd-writer-231217/
