LG GSA-H10N suddenly won't recognize blank CDs nor DVDs; reads fine- dead?

Generic white box P4 system running Windows 2000 SP4 (I know, I know…)

Burner is an ATAPI LG GSA-H10N, JL10 firmware.

Suddenly today the burner won’t recognize blank CDs or blank DVDs, using the same CD-R and DVD-R media I’ve used for awhile (MAM-A archive DVD-Rs, Staples DVD-Rs, Fuji CD-Rs and Sony CD-Rs).

DVD Identifier says:

[20:38:32] Waiting For Drive To Initialize Disc…
[20:38:37] ERROR : Unable To Initialize Disc In Time : Not ready - Medium not present [02/3A/00]

I don’t have another system handy to test the drive in right now,
but are there any possible fixes, or do I just have a dead drive?
It’s only a couple of years old and has burned less than 50 discs.

Hello

Unusual for a drive to stop recognising both blank DVD and CD media at the same time. But if it reads burned and/or pressed media fine then it doesn’t look (to me ;)) like there is anything physically, i.e. hardware-wise, wrong with it.

First things that jump out as possible culprits - in this order - would be some other piece of software interfering or a dodgy IDE cable.

Can you list any other software installed on the PC, that might interfere with the drive, or that accesses it in any way? All burning software, any virtual drive/emulation software you have installed etc.

I’m guessing the drive boots from CD/DVD OK? This would rule in or out a hardware problem straightaway.

Try to read and recognize those CDs and DVDs you have burnt with it first…
