LG GSA-H10N Problems

I’m just about ready to take this burner out of my computer and set it on fire. I bought this burner to back up my dvd collection to keep it safe from the kids,so far I haven’t been able to get even one good copy with this burner.

The problem I am having is the movie will say it copies ok and spit out the disk, when I try and play it back in ANY dvd player other than the burner itself It freezes and goes to #^%$ at about the 1:10 of every movie I have tried.

I have spent many hours searching this forum for a fix and everything I have tried so far is a no go. Here is what I have tried so far

Tried both the latest version of DVD43 and AnyDVD
Tried both 1 click DVD Copy pro and Recode 2
Tried using different firmware JL10, JL11 and JJ11
Tried burning about 10 different movies, same result on all of them
Tried different media, Maxell and Verbatim
Drive is the only drive on that IDE channel and is set to master
DMA is enabled and currently at UDMA 4
3 Different stand alone DVD players, all freeze at the same point in the movie

I have tried to rule out everything except the burner itself by changing one thing at a time and trying again. I have now changed every piece of software, different source discs, different media, and am still having the exact same problem.

I’m out of idea’s at this point and almost ready to take the drive back. I have tried all the things mentioned and still end up with movies that freeze about 3/4 of the way though.

Idea’s anyone???

Welcome to the forum

Usually these problems are due to a bad burn.

Can you give more details? What media are you using exactly? Can you post also mediacode? You can retrieve mediacode using cd-dvd speed or dvd identifier.

At what speed did you burn these discs?

Thank you for the welcome!

Not sure if this is what you where loooking for or not. Disks burned at 16x

These discs are good quality. Try to burn them @12x; usually give better results @12x

What software are you burning with? If Nero please post your Nero burn log, it does provide a lot of good info. (edit out your Nero registration number)

Do they play on the PC?

@ g’kar Yes I am burning with nero Recode 2, log is below

@pfloyd1 Yes, they will play back without any problems at all if I play them back on the burner the disks where originally burned with. Any other pc experience the same problems as the stand alone dvd players. Movie plays perfectly up until the 1:05 min mark then I get heavy pixilation? sound starts to studder and then they just freeze up.

I tried burning Black Hawk Down last night, copy came out perfect. That was the fist good copy out of about 10 that I have tried so far with this burner. Tried to burn Capote this morning, same programs and settings as I used with BHD and it again craps out on me at the 1:05 mark, up until that point though the movie is absolutely perfect. Here is my nero log files for Capote burned this morning, maybe someone can see something in them I’m missing.

  1. did you try burning at a slower speed? 12x ?
  2. you seem to be using Nero 7.5.0.2. that’s a leaked beta version, so problems are to be expected. use an older, ‘legit’ version.

Now using Nero 7.2.7.0.

When I get to the burn screen in nero it only lets me select 1x, 2x, 2.4x or maximum, there is no 4x, 8x or 12 listed?? Anyone tell me why that is or how I can try the burn at 12X?

I’m going to run to the store and pick up some RW’s. I already have enough coasters, I’ll try again and post my new log shortly.

From your burn log:

I noticed that your Western Digital device, I assume a WD 250GB hard disk shows DMA “OFF”, maybe it is contributing to your problem…I’m used to seeing a Nero burning log though, not a Recode to Burn log…Try your Nero Info Tools and see if this come up the same showing your Western Digital device as DMA “OFF”.

Try re-enabling DMA by removing the hard disk controller and rebooting…first make sure your BIOS is seeing your WD Hard Disk as a DMA device before proceeding…as you may need to seperate both devices if they are sharing an IDE port to ensure compatibility…

Many times the device tree does not agree with what Nero sees.

Also in addition to the above mentioned:

It looks like you possibly are using an nVidia IDE driver, if so uninstall it and use the default MS drivers, you lose very little performance but gain a lot of compatibility.

From your Nero log:

=== Scsi-Device-Map ===
CdRomPeripheral : HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-H10N atapi Port 0 ID 0 DMA: On
DiskPeripheral : WDC WD2500KS-00MJB0 nvata Port 2 ID 0 DMA: Off

Yes you are right about the drive, it is a 250gb WD and is a sata 2 drive if that makes any difference.

It doesn’t show anything in regards to the hard drive and dma in Info Tools.

I will try burning a copy using an image in nero and post my log.

I have no ideas related to SATA2 other than a driver problem (try uninstalling the SATA2 driver and use the default MS driver), if it is a problem…The fact that Nero sees it as DMA OFF may be the problem but I think you may need to GOOGLE that one…You can try using Image Burn (ISO burner) and Image Tools Classic (creates ISO) (all freeware) and see if this helps, other than that I’m out of ideas…

I am using the MS SATA driver for my SiS chipset mainboard SATA IDE device and it works fine.

yeah, i’d recommend using MS drivers.
as for the DMA thing, sometimes Nero doesn’t show the right DMA settings.
maybe it’s because the drive is on SATA (though i haven’t seen this in Nero logs before so i don’t know).
the log is the Recode log and right after it is the regular Nero log.

Ok after much, much more testing and fooling around, and a few more coasters I have resolved the problem.

What was the solution you ask, burn them at 12x instead of 16x. Done many more tests with all the combinations of software above, all at 12x and not a single problem or coaster. All that messing around and it was such a simple solution all along. The only conclusion I can draw from this is that this burner just doesn’t like to burn any media at 16x. Strange for a 16x burner and 16x media I would think.

I only ran into one other problem using recode2, getting it to compress to the proper size to fit on a standard disk. Sometimes it comes out too big, sometimes too small and sometimes it manages to get it just right. It is ashame because out of all the programs I have used thus far, Recode seems to give the best picture quality. Anyway that is for another topic in another post.

Thank you all for your time and helping me get this burner sorted out, I hope someday I can repay the favor.

well, lots of people got very good 16x burns on this drive.
so either you have a problematic/defective drive, or there’s some other issue with your computer that hasn’t yet been resolved.
but if you’ve got things to work OK for you, that’s just fine.
