LG GSA-5163D Only Writing at 4x

Hi,

Apologies in advance if this has been covered, but I couldn’t find it.

I just received my LG GSA-5163D and was looking forward to burning at 16x. I have 2 sets of media. Memorex 16x, 4.7G DVD+R (product: 32025618) and Memorex 16x, 4.7G, DVD-R (product: 32025638).

I backed up my computer on a DVD-R using the Nero Express included with the drive and the log said I was writing at 4X (approximately 5200 KB/s). I then used the Nero CD-DVD Speed tool to create a DVD-R and DVD+R test disc, and both were written at 4X.

I have the A103 stepping of the firmware, I believe (I looked at the Device Instance Id string in the Details tab of the drive within device manager to figure this out – if there is an easier way, please let me know).

Any thoughts on how to get near 16X speed?

Thanks.

What’s teh media id (Perhaps your media isn’t supported). I just got same burner and it’s very good imo. It had a few burns @ 6 instead of 8 but no problem with Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden discs at hi-speed if that’s what i order. -Also mine has A104 fw, you may want to try that one. Somewhere on this page http://gb.lgservice.com/ Be careful you get the one for 5163D A104 and not the one for 5163B A105

Thank you for the reply. I will download the A104 stepping and try that. Can you give me an idea of where I might find the media ID?

Thanks.

use dvdidentifier
http://dvdidentifier.cdfreaks.com/
anyway in general memorex medias are crap and manufactured by ritek/prodisc/cmc

#5

Yeah, I guess I am finding out about Memorex the hard way – just 45 more DVDs to use, and I will have learned my lesson

Re: the firmware. I downloaded what I think is the A104 stepping for 5163D, but when I open the readme, it says 5163B

GSA-5163B Version A104 Firmware Update

To update the firmware of the GSA-5163B please refer to the following instructions:

Are they the same? Is it a typo?

Thanks.

That is just a typo and was discussed here before, it is no problem.
Post the DVDIdentifier media reports of your media.

Se you can see, CMC MAG. AM3 is not supported by the stock firmware, so it is only supported at 4x. PRODISC-R04-004 is supported at 16x. Check your cdspeed write speed in File/Options/Standard Tests.

Thanks for your help.

BTW, what is the recommended DVD +/- R brand for this drive?

#10

As with most good 16x DVD drives, Verbatim 8x and 16x and Taiyo Yuden 8x and 16x media are the best choice, if you can get them at a reasonable price. Both + or - media from these brands/factories are good, but with + media you get more options for (over)speed.
