LG GSA-4167B Dual Layer DVD burner - Not burning DVDs

First of all great forum I just signed up. I’m having a problem with my new LG GSA-4167B Dual Layer DVD burner. I’m hoping someone here can help.

I’ve installed Nero 7 which is working great and can burn CDs in a blink of an eye well nearly (gotta love that) however I can’t burn DVDs in any form. Nero will load the ISO file and then start the burn process, get to the leadin track and not go any further. I also tried to burn with Alochol 120% and Magic ISO with the same result. I use TDK DVD-R 1-8x

I’ve checked my IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and it tells me the transfer mode is Ultra DMA2 - Ultra 33 which i’m thinking is what it should be. And this is using the NVIDIA nForce4 control driver from my motherboard which is an ASUS A8N-SLI Premium.

I’ve also discovered and only in the last day or so that my system is showing an additional DVD/CD-ROM in my Computer and Windows Explorer where none exists the device manager is showing me I have a SCSIVAX DVD/CD-ROM SCSI Cd Rom Device and I definately know I don’t have 3 CD/DVD drives.

Can any help please been trying to fix this for hours?

Thanks in advance.

That is an Virtual Drive from Alcohol.

Please post a Nero log!

Thanks for the reponse about the virtual drive, however can I ask a silly question? What is it used for and how do I use the virutal drive?

Thanks again.

Uninstall the nvidia IDE driver and use only the Microsoft IDE driver included in the operating system. This will most likely fix the issue as the nvidia IDE driver is very buggy for optical drives.

Easiest way to do it is to go to install/uninstall programs in the control panel. Find the nvidia driver package, but choose to ONLY uninstall the IDE drivers under the uninstall procedure - don’t uninstall the other drivers as they are needed for good graphics performance etc - only the IDE drivers.

I am also facing the same problem. I am unable to burn at 8x. Do you have any solution to it? I am also using the TDK DVD-R 1-8x. My motherboard is Asrock uli and the driver my drive is using is the windows.

Start Nero CD-DVD Speed. Go to the Disc Info tab. Check under Basic information - there it will list the supported write speeds.

If it says only 4x there - then the LG support your media at 4x only.

Thanks guys for all the responses. I’m still having no luck… Do you think I might need a re-install? Another suggestion i’ve been given is that the builder may have put the drive on a raid controller or the drive is faulty.

Then test the drive on another cable/connection/controller or in another computer if you can.

I still can’t lick that problem… Here is the Nero log if it helps at all.

Thanks a heap guys.

The one thing you haven’t tried changing is the discs you are using. TDK 8x DVD-R is not good quality media. See this post :

http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=155492

The one thing I did not mention there was that I had fairly high levels of PI errors at the start of each disc. If you look at the Qscan graph I posted in that other thread, you can see that the focus error levels at the start of the disc are just within the acceptable range for 8x burning. It is possible your poor 4167B could not even start the burn because it simply could not handle even that or worse, your discs are of even worse quality than mine.

Try with some other discs, please. It might just solve your problems.

After all the hours I spent on this damn thing it was the CRAP TDK Media afterall!! Thanks to everyone who replied with suggestions I tried them all. This is a great forum I come back and read daily.

Cheers to everyone
