LG GSA-4166B Write Error on DVDR

I just picked up this burner and it burned the first couple of DVDs great, then all of a sudden poof it just stops working, every once in a while it will burn one but 99% of the time I get a write error almost immediately after starting the process. I have tried everything I have seen suggested and that I know of to try so hoping someone else has an idea. It is hooked up alone as the primary drive on the 2nd IDE channel. Jumper settings are correct. DMA is turned on. I have tried burning multiple types of files on multiple discs off of multiple drives and all the same. It has no problem reading cd’s and I havent tried burning onto a cd. Below is my latest log file from Nero. I have also tried other programs as to eliminate it being a Nero issue. Also tried uninstalling and running a cleaner and reinstalling just in case. Burning mainly onto Verbatims so not cheap media either.

Hopefully someone else can figure this one out as I would hate to know I have a dead drive after 5 or so burns. Any other info needed I will be glad to provide.

Hello Doss2k and welcome to the forum!

A few quick questions :

  1. I’m assuming you have 2 HDs on SATA and 2 on IDE. The DMA for your 4166B is turned on but how come the DMA on all your drives seems to be off?

  2. Can your 4166B read DVDs (not counting DVD movie discs)?

  1. The 4 drives listed with it off are attached to an ata133 controller card, I only have the system drive attached to the primary chain and the dvd burner only attached to the secondary chain. I usually have another cdrom attached as a slave but have removed it for now until I can get this working again.

  2. Yes, I am listening to mp3’s burned to a verbatim disc exactly the same as I am trying to burn to.

I am beginning to think this may be a power issue as I have resolved everything else. I am running a 400W and have been running 5 HDs, 2 cd rom drives, 3 fans, along with the board and such for quite a while. My old apartment was hell on brownouts as well even though I have it running through an UPS system. Been having other issues recently with one drive not coming up and things of that nature. May just order a 600W supply and see if that helps anything out. Also it may be that my old drive wasnt dead, it too could do some reading, but would fail in the middle of writing with a power calibration error which may point to a lack of power as well. I have tried stripping it down to only 2 drives and the burner and still the same thing so still a bit puzzled on this one.

Change the media, Ritek G05 is really crap.

Thats not the normal media I use, just so happens that was a different one I was trying to eliminate that, I use Verbatim’s normally which I have been using for 8 years or so without any issues.

I have confirmed that it will burn audio and data cdr’s perfectly fine, again using verbatim media. Appears it just doesnt want to write to dvdr and occasionally has issues reading dvdr media as well. PSU issue still sound like the most logical answer here?

Could be, but it could also be that the drive itself is faulty. Can you connect the drive up to another system and see if it works with DVDs? That should pretty much confirm if it is the drive at fault or something else.

Well, I replaced my old drive with this one due to similar issues, it was half working and half not working. This one worked fine for the first couple of burns then started acting up, I am going to be putting together an older AMD 400 Mhz system, but I dont know that this burner will work all that great in such an old system lol. The errors I was getting on the previous drive were Power Calibration errors, sometimes during a burn, sometime when starting to write. Like I said I normally run 5 HD’s, 2 cd rom drives, 3 case fans along with the mobo and such in here off a 400W PSU. It only has 4 hookups for peripheral devies so I have also been using quite a few splitters in there. I can only imagine this PSU has been taxed pretty high over the few years it has been doing this. Ive tried everything others have mentioned around the forums and it seems like everyone suggests when all else fails PSU could be the culprit because it causes strange things to happen. I may pickup a new 600W one with hookups for 8 devices and see what happens, cant hurt to have an extra one laying around in case anyways :).

Well, I have now confirmed it is not a PSU issues as I just installed a new one and same problem. Also switched out the memory just to rule that out, same thing. I am at a loss as to what could cause this other than the drive dying after a few burns. Strange thing was I was able to get it to burn once after it started having these issues… but only once lol. Posted is my most recent log file… if anyone has any other ideas I am all ears.

I have the same drive, I’m going to the plextor becaus of different issues, I can not stop the freez issues with dvd-r, I also have the 1.02 firm.no change. benn to verbs, TY’s all the regular media, cant stop the dissapointment with the LG GSA4166B

On a brighter note, the drive I replaced with this one was giving me power calibration errors so I figured the laser was dead, read around said maybe it could be dirty. Out of warranty so I went ahead and spent a good hour taking it apart and cleaning the lens which looked perfectly clean, but apparently wasnt as it is at least attempting to burn a dvd again, hopefully it will come out ok and I can pop out a few more with this burner while I am waiting for the LG to come back since I think all I am left to do it claim it as a defective drive.

Well, finally had a chance to take this back and replace it, and works like a charm so far, guess it was simply a bad drive after all :(. Disappointing for my first LG product.

Yes, rather. Good thing it was still covered by warranty. What did they replace it with? The same model?
