LG GSA-4163b - Keep Getting "Could Not Perform End Of Disc-At-Once" - Please HELP

Hi.

I have been using my Lg GSA-4163b without problems for quite some time and I might have burned up to 100 dvds and many cds smoothly. 2 Days ago, upon realizing I needed to cleaN up some space on my hdd I attempted to burn a dvd and the burn failed with the error message “Could Not Perform End Of Disc-At-Once”. After then I got about 3 more coasters. I use VERBATIM DVD+R’s by the way. I checked the burner’s transfer mode and it was PIO. I am sure it was set to DMA, so I figured this must be due to XP’s policy of falling back to PIO mode after 6 cumulative CRC errors. I searched the net and found a helpful site (which I can’t find right now but meanwhile I realized there are many other sites explaining the same method) with a step by step explanation of how to switch back the mode to DMA by editing the registery… Anyway, the DMA problem is solved. DMA is on that means. I ran the Nero infotool and noticed that my ASPI was gone too. That must have happened when I uninstalled and re-installed the dvd-writer, I guessed. I used ForceAspi and successfully installed Aspi layer 4.60.

After all, a few more burn failures happened. I even replaced the dvd-writer’s data cable with a brand new one. I tried all burning speeds (12, 8 and 4X). Nothing helped. I am pasting 2 error logs below and I’ll be grateful if some kind person could help me with this problem.

Thanks in advance to all.

Please somebody help me with this…

CdRomPeripheral : HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4163B atapi Port 3 ID 0 DMA: Off

No problem, you must enable the DMA mode.

check my sig.

Thanks for taking the time to respond…

As I have explained, at first the dma was off. The first log is from then. Then I fixed it and turned dma mode on. You can see that in the second log the dma mode is on. But still I keep getting the same error…

If you could help me with this, I’ll be thankful.

Hi meurglys0. Try burning a disc at max speed with Nero CD/DVD Speed and report back with the results. This thread may help you to capture the results:
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=119042

Also try a Benchmark test of a known good disc.

Thank you for your response.

Forgive my ignorance but is this what you’re asking for?:

No, that’s just a simulated burn (the disc is still blank). You need to use the Create Disc tab to actually burn the disc, and then use the Benchmark tab to test if the burned disc is readable.

Edit: You need to upgrade your version of Nero CD/DVD Speed:

A friend had the very same problem with his 4163. He cleared the drive’s lens and lubricated the rail over which the lens slide (I don’t know how that part is called). His drive works fine now. Maybe this could help you too.

I opened cd/dvdspeed and selected the “create data disc” tab under the “Run Test” tab. I received an error. Am I doing something wrong?

It’s been a long time since I’ve used the “Run Test” menu. What happens if you select the “Create Disc” tab and click the start button.

v4.7.7.3 is the latest version, available on the link I provided.

This is the image of the burn:

These are the benchmark results… I did one right after the burn, then I ejected and reinserted the disc twice to do two more… I did these by selecting the Benchmark tab and pressing the start button.

meurglys0, it doesn’t look good. You could try burning that media at a lower speed and see if it’s any better but it does look like you may have a drive fault.

A lens clean with a known brand name brush type cleaning disc may help but no guarantees. One of these is well worth having though. I get definite improvements in burn quality after using one on my drives, so it wouldn’t be a waste of money to try it.
