LG GSA-4160B burning DVD DL problems

#1

Hey there, I’ve been recently having problems burning DL memorex dvd’s on my burner. I’ve burned countless CD’s and DVD’s before with no problem, but I just wanted to try the DL discs, but everytime I try to burn something I get errors, either Illegal Disc Errors or Unspecified Disc Error. I don’t normally like posting like this, I liek to figure it out myself, but it’s driving me crazy and I can’t find a solution. Any info helps, thanks I appreciate it. Hopefully this post isn’t to noob like.

I would try some 2.4x rated discs (preferably Verbatim) - I doubt there’s even firmware support for any 8x +R DL.

Plus Verbatim are about the best, most consisten DL discs you can buy anyway.

#3

Did you set this speed?

#4

I did cause I read up that my burner’s max speed for DL discs are 2.4 and everytime I tried to burn a disc (which resulted in failure) the max speed was 5x. And to Arachne, does that mean I can’t use these discs at all because they’re 8x? Cause the label says 2.4-8x so they should be ok right?

#5

also on a side note, when I open up My Computer, my disc drive comes up as CD Drice (D:)

#6

Read down to post #18 & see if this helps as an alternative option for you.
And to Arachne, does that mean I can’t use these discs at all because they’re 8x? Cause the label says 2.4-8x so they should be ok right?
The disc’s media code (in this case, RITEK S04 in the log) must be supported in the drive’s firmware - and given that’s an older drive, it’s highly unlikely that there’s support for any 8x +R DL in the firmware. So what it will do is drop back to a “default” write strategy, used for unsupported media.

This may or may not burn OK, only way is to try it. I would use the offered 2.4x instead of 1x.

This is why I said try 2.4x Verbatim +R DL - it’ll be supported in the drive’s firmware.

Edit: I’ve just had a look at the A306 firmware, and Verbatim 2.4x discs (MKM 001) are indeed supported at 2.4x. However, RITEK S04 is not.

#8

Yup, only MKM001 would make sense with this oldish burner…

#9

I have this burner (my very first DVD burner ) and the disc you are trying to burn, is not in the firmware. You should try another DL disc.

#10

All other DVD+R DL listed except MKM001 are biggest el crappo stuff. :stuck_out_tongue:

#11

Ahh, so thank you all for your help lol. You all made a lot of sense :D. Sucks cause by the sounds of it I’m pretty much SOL lol. Well thanks! I was driving myself bonkers trying to figure out why. So now I gotta sell these discs to someone :stuck_out_tongue: lol. So if I’mtrying to to burn a DL disc, how would I know what would be compatible with my burner? Thanks all by the way for your help, I’ve had some comp problems in the past and the forums I replied on were harsh and unhelpful. You all have been awesome  Thanks

#12

To make sure you have utmost compatibility with your burner, go for Verbatim 2.4x +R DL discs  - it’s hard to say what brands you’d find the other mediacodes (in the firmware) under, so Verbies definitely are your best bet.

And you’re most welcome.
