LG GSA-4082B Not Working

vbimport

#1

I have a LG GSA-4082B that I bought about an year ago, and now all of a sudden, its not working anymore. I tried it on two different systems and none of them work. It can read okay at times, but cannot write at all. I am on firmware version 208.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

#2

Have you made any changes to your primary machine or updated firmware? Perhaps changed media that you use…burning software?

#3

I use Nero and tried B’s Recorder Gold. I never updated the firmware until the problems started appearing, then I updated to the latest one… I have made no changes to my machine.

I used various types of media, Maxell, TDK, BenQ, Optodisc, Mitsubishi…

I tried changing the master/slave configurations, and none of them work.
I have tried:
Primary IDE Master: Hard Drive
Secondary IDE Master: DVD-ROM
Secondary IDE Slave: DVD-Writer

Primary IDE Master: Hard Drive
Secondary IDE Master: DVD-Writer
Secondary IDE Slave: DVD-ROM

Primary IDE Master: Hard Drive
Primary IDE Slave: DVD-ROM
Secondary IDE Master: DVD-Writer

Is there any other ones I can try?

#4

And what about CDs? Are you able to read and write them?

#5

I am able to read them, but am not able to write them. They either burn unsuccessfully, will not burn, or come out blank.

#6

ksoiehawo, have you turned on dma? If not, read this: http://sniptools.com/vault/getting-back-to-dma-mode-in-windows-xp.htm

Also, you should disable xp burning software(imapi). Go to start-execute, and type services.msc then look for imapi burning software. Disable it! Reboot and you should be able to burn.

#7

It seems that ksoiehawo’s LG has also some reading problems, not only writing.

#8

doesn’t work :frowning:

#9

Would a Nero error log be of any help? I could attach one if it helps.

#10

Try changing your screen resolution. I did that and my gsa-4082b started reading/writing all dvds again. Weird problem though.

#11

Something like 800x600 and Medium 16 - not True color.

#12

The problems even worse now, the drive cannot do anything. It’s listed in “My Computer”, and thats about it. It can’t read anything now… I’ll try your suggestion with the resolution, maybe it’ll work  .

#13

Changing resolution doesn’t work. The drive stopped responding, so changing the resolution didn’t do much… When I put any type of disc in, it spins for about 2 seconds and then stops. The only thing that happens is that in “My Computer”, DVD-RAM drive changes to CD-ROM or DVD-ROM Drive. When I click on the icons, it says the drive is empty.

#14

any suggestions?

#15

I would try to see if LG will replace it. How close are you to owning it for a year. LG will sometimes be lenient as far as time is concerned in exchanging drives, so you may want to give it a shot.

#16

I got about one month left, bought it at the end of May last year.
The thing is, this drive has died on me before a couple of times and come back to life, and LG says if they find the drive not faulty, I will be charged. I am scared that when they recieve it, it might start working again…

…and they don’t tell me what they will charge me, if its what I bought it for ($125), I might as well go get a new 16x/DL burner.

#17

MY GOSH THIS IS FRUSTRATING! :frowning:
My Burner just came back to life again (at least for reading, it did)
I am going to test a simple write right after I finish this message…

Has anyone ever had this sort of consistency problems before with their drive?

#18

im having the same problem

my burner wont burn it will just read and sometimes when it reads it disappears from the windows explorer and i have to restart to get it back

its a LG 4082B also

ide is fine no damaged cables it worked fine with the media i used for about 40 burns in the run of about 3 weeks now it will only read at best

ive updated to A209

updated nero

u think it could be the xp burning software?

here is the nero burn log with imapi turned off

That’s exactly what mine is doing! After reading around, I’m tempted to come to the conclusion that the drive is faulty.

My LG 4082B is having very similar issues to other posters. Thinking it may be a function of sp2 I removed it and the burner did function for a brief period; to the point that I thought I had solved the problem; however that does not seem to be the case since now it has ceased being recognised by windows (again) or other software I am using (it worked an hour ago).
I did upgrade to A209.
I am now well out of warranty.
After reviewing other users comments I recently purchased a NEC ND 3520A - this is functioning fine.
