Mine already has this firmware and so is the reason mine works while yours did not seem to.
Thank you, but I updated my drive with the A300 firmware as soon as I got it. The firmware was already on LG's Canadian site, and appeared on the USA site within a day.
All reports from all forums so far indicate that the GSA-4040B, at the moment, will write at 4x only to 2 brands of DVD-R media:
1) Ritek (media ID of RitekG04). Unfortunately, this is reliably available only on the Internet in bulk, so ordinary retail consumers will not encounter it except off-and-on. The Legacy retail brand reportedly sometimes uses Ritek, but often uses Princo instead.
Ironically, I myself have been sticking to retail, branded media ever since I was burned by the counterfeit Maxell disks:
2) TDK. Unfortunately, TDK 4x DVD-Rs are apparently extremely new, extremely scarce, and probably extremely expensive in comparison with other brands. I was not able to find any source of these on the Internet at any price, and the list of product codes on TDK's Web site does not list them either.
The bottom line is that unless and until LG enhances its firmware to support more media brands, the only readily available choice for 4x DVD-R burning is RitekG04, and this is the message we need to get out to all actual and potential GSA-4040B owners. I myself will probably order Ritek media with Ritek's explicit logo (ugly though they might be)
to avoid the risk of getting counterfeits.
