I was browsing new egg and i came across this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136249 Is this the first burner that does 14x on BDR? It is also quad layer/BDXL compatible. Has anyone heard or read anything about this drive? like riplock, bitsetting, media compatibility, scanning, etc.

The drive label does state “Designed by Hitachi-LG”. First Blu-ray burner from them with a Mediatek chip. Looks like an original .
OK, might be a “similar to the Pioneer design” drive, IMHO.
SmartBlu 4x BD-R (Branded) TDKBLD-RBB (MIUAE) BH14NS40 1.00 Burned at 8x OPC on
First test burn on this drive.
might pick up one.
can it scan media since its mediatek?
The Drive does not support Disc Quality and Jitter scans with current version ODC and Ltnflash. The Drive’s burn quality is good but always receive high jitter reports. Also the Drive’s body is very hot during burning/reading discs. Hopefully the problems can be fixed by new firmware release.
