I had updated my first writer to A102, but since it was faulty, I returned it to the shop and got another one few days later, with factory A100 firmware.
I'm not fussed about the latest version, as I prefer quality over speed, and most firmware updates are about increasing speed and adding more blank media. And I'm using TDK, which is known to every manufacturer and so is likely to be properly supported from the start. Not a certainty, but very likely.
If you plan on using various lesser known brands that change OEM suppliers constantly and you are always after the fastest burn possible, then updating to the vary latest firmware makes sense. It may not solve every speed problem or support every brand, but it's the best bet.
