LG-4120B wont burn at 12X using a 16X Media

Pretty much said it all in the title. This drive has specs to 12X but until now I only had 8X media. Now I have cracked open a 16X and it seems it does not recognise it and doesnt even offer maximum or 12X … The software just gives me 4x or 2x.

Has anybody run into this or know of any problems. The firmware in it is the one from the LG website.

I would have thought it would drop down but it just isnt the case.

I am using a nero product to burn… and perhaps that is the problem as well.

Any suggestions would be appreciated or I have a long wait for these 100 dvd’s to burn!

Cheers

Hi and Welcome!

this drive can only handle a few 16x rated media. For most new media, there is no write method defined in the firmware, so the drive is using a generic write method at 2x or 4x speed. Results are poor in most cases.

There is nothing you can do about this. You may try Verbatim discs, but I’d suggest to stick with 8x media if these are still available.

Michael

Thank you for your quick response… I am using Memorex but clearly it isnt going to work and there is no 12x media around.

I think it may be difficult to find 8x around so I guess a new dvd player is in store, one that can handle the new media… or I have 99 coasters … well not quite as I will just let it take it’s time… with an attitude of course!

Thank you

Actually it occured to me that that I had mentioned that according to the manual the drive cannot even handle 16x … but would have thought it would drop down and try 12X that is does do. Specs are 12X

Will look for some software solutions although I am pretty sure, it just wont work

Which media are you using DVD-R or DVD+R? I have an 4160B and it only burns at 16X using DVD+R media.

Waste of time. This drive doesn’t support any 16x rated media at all.

For 16x DVD+R, the list of supported MIDs is rather short:

Yes, DVD-R can be burned up to 8X. I bought 16X rated DVD+R media and it can only be burned at 4x and 8x; apparentely this media isn’t supported by the firmware. I didn’t know that a few media can be burned at 16X since I don’t use +R media very often.

With firmware A117, the 4120B will support 16x rated media of the mayor brands (Verbatim, Sony, TDK, Maxell, Taiyo Yuden) at 8x (DVD+R) and 6x (DVD-R) with good results.

Edit: Memorex branded 16x DVD+R (MID: CMC MAG-M01-00) is also supported by A117

@ Dr. Kaputnik

Thank you for the information. I have looked and downloaded the latest firmware (as I was still at A102 and the last time I had looked, it was still the latest. Unfortunately, I am using Memorex -r … I had some bad experiences with +r 's in the beginning and have pretty much stayed with -r’s. It seems that +r are becoming more prevalent now.

The latest version for me in Canada appears to be A111 - it seems to differ from country to county… I did check others to see A117 and even though I did not see it, would think it not best to use it just the same.

I will give it a shot sometime soon as the notes to say it should improve overall performance and I have little to lose… Sad to have 99 16X or should I sax 4x sitting here - I will see if someone can use them or just be patient

Cheers

afaik A117 is not an official LG firmware, so you won’t find it on their site. I think it was for Buffalo OEM drives. Anyway you can find an RPC1 version of this firmware here. If you want to use the rest of your 99 disks (@6x burning speed) and do not want to buy a new burner, you should give A117 a try.

btw, could you please post the mediacode of your Memorex -R media. You can use DVD Identifier for that.
