I'm running windows XP home edition. I recently suffered a major crash and had to get some gurus to wipe my hard drive and reinstall XP for me. Since then things went wrong again and I reinstalled XP from the recovery disk that came with my system and spent 4 hours installing all the XP updates. Up until the last XP installation my sound was working perfectly. Now I have no sound. All I get is the beeps from the internal speaker.
Device Manager tells me that the MPU-401 is working perfectly. Yet, when I try to play a sound file with Media Player it tells me I don't have a sound card installed.
I have tried to update the driver and it tells me that it cannot find a better driver than what I already have. I do not have any disk for the sound card other than the recovery disk.
How can I get XP to recognize the card that was working perfectly before the last XP installation?
