LDW 851S GS0C Problems

Just updated my drive with the lastest and “GREATEST” firmware, HMMMMM. I was using the hacked version of the GS0A with the ricoh 8X and was fairly content with the burn quality. But now I have this “POOOOP”. Please tell me what you guys think ? What can I do to improve the situation. I like the fact that the drive does Booktype changing, but what good does it do me if the burns are so bad? Also it doesn’t burn at 8X with this firmware only 4X.

Some scans of the same media with the GS0A hacked firmware and burned at 8X. Decent burns.

Sorry for my bad english but there can i find the hacke FW for the 851s? Thx for aour answer!

#4

I had the same experience, going from GS08 to GS0C. I’ve settled on the hacked GS0A, which seems very nice.

This thread is recommended reading for anyone with a 851S.

Hi, Ssseth.

Thanks. That was one of the threads I read before deciding to “downgrade” from 0C.

 Here’s the only burn i made so far @8x by 451s@851s (GS0C)!! Booktype changed to DVD-Rom!

Disc Type : [DVD+R]
Manufacturer ID : [RICOHJPN]
Media Type ID : [R01]
Product Revision : [002]
Disc Application Code : [General Purpose]
Recording Speeds : [2.4x - 4x]
Blank Disc Capacity : [Not Supported By Method 2]

The result seems better than one i burned @4x 451s(GSB7). It’s a data disc, but the spike in the start seems to affect one of the data file, which is unreadable by old lens .

Overall though the errors (even the spikes) are still well within the average/adequate range.
What can you not read the disc on?

I have an old Sony DVD-Rom drive on my old computer. I use it & CDCheck on all the disc i’ve burned (CD&DVD), just to see if the files are readable. Not really for compatability, but figure that if this old len can read it, i can at least use the disc as a backup!!

The disc i mentioned above has a hard time on recognising by the sony dvd drive… And the read speed is really slow (1x)!! This one file has problem being read and CDCheck has error on this file: “Incorrect function…” Which i think it means unreadable!!

Have you tried updating the firmware on that old drive?

I did update it once which was about 2 years ago!!
The thing is it’s a ps2 backup, and ps2 can’t read it either!!

Hmmm, well usually higher spikes like that show up near the end and not at the beggining. So perhaps that’s why the PS2 is having problems reading it.

Have you verified it has indeed been set to -ROM with DVDInfoPro yet?

Yes, it’a DVD-Rom, checked with DVDInfoPro and the Booktype util serveral times already. In fact, it’s loaded by the ps2, start new games, played the movie, and then hanged in the loading screen!!

Well those errors (I’m talking about the disc that has the max PI of 144) should not cause any loading issues on all but the most picky DVD players. I know though that a PS2 has been known to be a picky reader…
Do burnt movies play fine on it? Have you had success playing any backup up games on it yet?

My son’s [un modded] PS2 occasionally gets picky about loading original discs and he has to clean the CD drive. He likes it to sit on the bottom of his entertainment center and it seems to pick up a lot of dust there.

Look around on the net, there are several places selling service manuals on the PS2 cheap and they show you how to do the cleaning step by step -> Good info to have even if this isn’t your problem.

the movie in this game is a actual data file, so except that particular file, the others are fine…

The other 2 ricoh ps2 backup burned by 451s(GSB7)@4x have some real movie track, unseen session in computer!! The quality is ok and successfully loaded in ps2. But PI starts to rise from 200 in the middle to 379 in the end!! I will try to burn by 451@851s(GS0c) @4x when i get more ricoh disc (imation). The quality may be better according to the graph above.
