I thought LDW-811S could burn Taiyo Yudens DVD+Rs 4x at 8x…?

But:

Or do I need tweaked firmware or smth?

I feel abit disappointed - was so happy to find TY DVDs here in Lithuania, but never even thought they wouldnt burn at 8x… =/

TY 4x revision 0 writes at 4x.
TY 4x revision 1 writes at 8x.

In other words - you’ve got the revision 0 type.

oh… any quality differences between them?

or maybe, more important to me, which is better quality, these TY’s (sold as Verbatim DLP Super AZO Pastel 4x) OR Verbatim DLP Advanced AZO (which turns out to be MCC002, can be burned at 8x)?

I haven’t burned any of them yet. MCC’s are cheaper and can be burned at 8x, but somehow I trust TY more… suggestions?

Some old batches of revision 0 is to low quality to be written at 8x. But most works fine at 8x, but to be safe Lite-On have limited the speed to 4x.

Revision 1 should be better at handling 8x speed.

I prefer the TY ones over the MCC ones - but both is great in my opinion.

You’re right, I patched firmware to allow 8x for rev 0, but it didnt go too well. Spikes and generally high PI at start of disk (120+), then went down, and finished with average of 55.

Startd burning at 3.8… then somewhere like 10% switched to 6x… then at like 33% to 8x… is it how it’s supposed to be?

Yes. The 811s like most 8x DVD burners uses Z-CLV, Zone - Constant Linear Velocity. The new Plextor PX-712A however will use P-CAV, Partial - Constant Angular Velocity and should be a little faster than a 12x burner using Z-CLV. More info can be found here:

Granted it’s a discussion about CD burners, but the same principles still apply to DVD burners as well. Laterz.
