LDW-811s: Media to avoid thread

Hello folks

I have been searching the forum and have found some posts about media that has to be avoided if using the LDW-811s, but these are spread arround and it is difficult to spot all of them when you need to buy in a hurry.
I was not sure if posting this here or in the media forum, but as it is Liteon only related I think it should go well here. If it fits better in another place a mod can move this post easily.

Using the media in this thread has produced just coasters to several users in the LDW-811s. I have taken info from some threads and the user that has report them.

Please post your bad media entries here (please for this 811s drive only, and maybe for the 411s that is very alike) with some DVD Identifier information about it if possible, and the firmware version that you had at the momment of the coaster.

Sold as “25-pack Whitetop bulk utan fodral” in Norway. Burned with Nero 6.3.0.2 and 5.5.10.54.
They burn fine, but files are corrupt (not possible to copy them back to HD). K-probe shows errors in the scale of 1000!
Pioneer 106 DVD-ROM doesn’t see the disc when inserted. KISS DP-500 stand alone (uses Toshiba PC DVD-ROM drive) can read the disc but freezes due to the amount of errors in it.

Sold as Smartbuy (purple) 10 pack with box in Norway. Burned with Nero 6.3.0.2 and 5.5.10.54 at 1X. DIsc burns fine but Kprobe presents hight amount of errors.

Brand: Mirror 4x (No + or - description in the post)
Problem: LDW-811s drive only sees them as x1 disks, using them in the pioneer DVR-105 for months with no probs.

Brand: Datawrite yellow top 4x
Problem: “Discs are seen by the drive as x4 but when trying to burn at this speed i get a error and so i have to drop the disk speed to 2x”

I tried this DVSN in my 411S and is was complete garbage as well. Highest errors I’ve seen so far for any media. It was sold as Fortis here in Canada. See the DVD Media Tests forum for the scans.

I noticed you haven’t posted your scan results in the DVD Media Tests forums yet. It’s nice to put them there to help out other people as well. Check the guide in my sig tool #1 for details.

My 811s with firmware HS0E can’t lead out on this media and reports write failure. It can’t read this media afterwards either.
I’ve tried 4x and 2x with no result.
I’ve bought it in a package of 10 but they are also packed in 100’s :-). They look exactly like on the picture with one excemption. On the picture is written “Data/Video” but on mine only “for Data”. It’s simply waste of money. Unfortunatelly I’ve read this thread afterwards.

Im using mirror dvd-r with my 811s and they are working fine.

i’ve read things saying that burning with the same media over and over make things work better…

i suggest trying to burn several times on a particular media before we rate it here as not working.

i myself have tried to burn 2 dvd-r which failed on the lead out, anyways i was still able to read them with my lite-on dvd-cdrw combo… weird…

oh well… i’m gonna try to burn more with disks like the one i used haven’t checked who manufactured them yet… but as of now i don’t have a choice… so i’m just hoping that they’ll work

IMation media is a nightmare with the LDW-411/811S. Of course that’s because it is IMation :stuck_out_tongue:

I have Lite-On 411S@811S burner which have used with it more than 50 Imation DVD Disc with no problem at all.

A lot of times, a write strategy swap would get the media up and running… Best example is the princo. I assule the 811 has the same problems as the 812’s and write very similarely. The princo 1-2x can be wrote to at 4x and the 4x can be written @ 2x with archive quality and 4x as normal everyday use. They are cheap enough that I do not mind experimenting… IE I can buy 4-5 Princo’s for a sony… That do not work and give me a very nice CD case… I am not wasting $5 each time trying to figure out which strategy may work with the expensive media.

Cursor 4X -R GSC001… Coaster
Sony 4X -R SONY04D1…Coaster
LG 4X -R DVD-R:LGE04…Coaster
Imation 4X -R DVD-R:CMC MAG AF1… Not a coaster but barely works and not good to give to anyone else.

I have a few others but I forgot to write down the code… and the burn destroys the codes.

Look at this Cheap media written with an 812S@US0N… using write strategy swap. Cheaper than princo’s.

Dont work, already tried it with the MBI media 20 times. It did not work until the write swap and I had a 25 pack spindal and nothing to loose.

+R or -R… The AF1’s burn like crap. It failed in the middle of the disk. So I can see the DVD menu and watch the ending. :stuck_out_tongue:

There are other threads that deal with it. Look in the stickies, basically you load up the bin flash rom file into omni patchers and click on your dvd media and it will bring up another window where you can select a new strategy to use instead of the default. Seems using MCC strategy instead of MBI works a lot better on MBI media for some reason. Like to get 8x to burn correctly you have to use an 8X burn strategy… Just making the disk 8X capable wont give good results. the burns for 4x and 8x have to be different and you need something to take care of the extra stuff.

I’ve had bad luck with these:

  1. Princo white top 4x -R
  2. Eagle 4x -R (LEADDATA01)
  3. ProMedia 8x +R (Sony D11)

This is all with firmware HSOQ. There are scans of the ProMedia crap in the Media Test forum.

FWIW, my 811S really liked Khypermedia branded CMCs, and I got some decent results with Maxell as well (RG02?).

I don’t think that is valid. Otherwise everyone that owned a dodgy 811 would now have an 812, or wouldn’t be complaining.
