LDW-411S burns slow when using 8x disks

I’ve been burning with no problems for a year now but recently I have been unable to find a good deal on the 4x disks and have been buying 8x instead. Problem is that my burner will only write at 1x speed on them. Anyone know the fix to this? Is it just a firmware upgrade? Any help is appreciated!

You need the latest firmware update for your 411s. If the media codes for the “newer” blanks are not in the firmware that you are currently running, the drive will revert to the “generic” write strategy (slow and unreliable, you do NOT want to use them this way at all!).

I do not know the latest firmware for your drive but go check and see if you are “up to date”. Hopefully Lite On has put out a new enough 411s firmware that will support all of the “currently available” media.

I had the same exact problem with my 4112@811s a few months back. I was trying to use new (at the time) 8X rated Memorex DVD-R’s but the drive didn’t recognize the new disc’s. There were no firmware updates for the 811s that were newer than at least 3 months at the time so I “gave up” and moved to an 812s@832s.

I sold the 411s@811s to a friend and Lite On finally released a new firmware in September for the 811s and it now works with those 8X DVD-R disc’s.

I think it stinks that the manufacturers do not always keep up to date with the firmware for their products, especially when these products were sold new just a few months ago! Because without support, the newer DVD media is “all that is available at the current time” and if the drive doesn’t recognize the only media you can find, you are “totally out of luck”!

Let us know if the latest 411s firmware solves your issue, I’m curious to see if Lite On is keeping up with the times, considering I bought a 411s just about Ten months ago & I’d hope that they still support it!

Thanks for the info, i thought that it was prbly due to the outdated firmware… should say that I feared it too! The problem is that there are so many different firmware updates available, should I do the latest one? They warn that if you do you cannot go back and I don’t like the sounds of that.

Also I have been working with PC’s for many years and am quite comfortable with pretty much anything I’ve done with them as far as building and upgrading but believe it or not I’ve never done a firmware upgrade. If it’s a simple thing like updating a driver then I will jump right on it.

As a relative novice to firmware ugrading I was fairly apprehensive about upgrading firmware too. Bur really it is very simple. Liteon have the official fsok firmware on their site but most of the ealier firmwares can easily be downloaded from this and othersites. The guides explain it well. I found that the Ritek G05,s did not burn well with the official software and so after trying several different hacks with omnipatcher found that I get a much better burn with the G05 patched to the Ritek m02 strategy, using the fsoj firmware. Thanks to all the people working on these utilities.Shame Litoen do not spend the same effort on improving firmware for their own products.
It is all much simpler to do than it sounds.

I am using the FS0K F/W for my Liteon 411S. When I use a Memorex 8x DVD the only choice I get to burn it at is 2x. I am using Nero 6.3.0.0. No problem burning 4x DVD’s at 4x. Any help is appreciated.

Follow the link in my signature. It will also lead you to DVDIdentifier, so you can post the media code of the disks you are using.

#7

@ala42…downloaded your MCSE Tool but I don’t know what to do with it. All I want to do is to be able to open Nero and burn an 8x DVD at 8x instead of 2x. I also installed DVD Identifier.

CMC MAG AE1 is a -R media. The 411 hardware can burn -R only at 4x, even when it it upgraded to a 811 firmware. Even the latest HS0R firmware does not support this code.
Start MCSE, load the FS0K firmware as .bin or unscrambled .exe file from the codeguys site and rename a -R code to CMC MAG AE1, so the firmware knows this code. If you do not need it, rename CMC MAG AF01, so you have to change only one letter. Save and flash the modified firmware, make a test burn and post a kprobe BLER scan at 4x scan speed.
If the result if fine, you are done. If it is bad, check the strategy changing thread and change the strategy with omnipatcher.

Hi,

I have 8x media which burn only at 2x. These disks are branded as Moser Baer 8X
DVD-R. Earlier 4X media burnt like a charm with PO errors within 5.

I am using an unmodded LDW-411S with FS0K. The above media ID is not included in the firmware and I tried modifying stock FS0K firmware with MCSE tool with data imported from DVD-Identifier 3.6.2. After the flash 4x writing was enabled (I’m using Nero 6.6.0.6) and the po errors seem to have decreased drastically at the start of the disk (below 15) and then increase over 500 after 50% of the disk capacity (using Kprobe).

Could anyone suggest a proper writing strategy for FUJIFILM03 media using Omnipatcher. These disks are the only option available in the local stores here (Mumbai, India) and come with a replacement warranty. I will primarily be using these disks to burn data.

Thanks in advance,
xytise

P.S. The drive works wonderfully with older Moser Baer 4X media both +R & -R but these media are not available anymore.

@ala42…I assume you mean rename CMC MAG AE1, to CMC MAG AF1 so you have to change only one letter.

Save and flash the modified firmware, make a test burn and post a kprobe BLER scan at 4x scan speed.

What is a kprobe BLER?

If the burner gets programmed with bad f/w can i always run the lite on FS0K.exe file and recover?

sorry I meant:

NEVER MIND…I am presently burning a memorex 8x CD at 4x speed. Before the hack I would only be able to burn at 2x.

I got a copy of FS0K.bin…modifed CMC MAG. AF1 to CMC MAG. AE1. Using your MCSE tool, GENIUS, PURE GENIUS!!! Saved it. Used the windows F/W burning tool (got the MS error report just left it there) set it to update and I am now done.

Just tested the newly burned DVD…it works!!!

Is there any thing bad about changing the image to CMC MAG. AE1, will another DVD I put in there someday, not work?

#14

Kprobe BLER is the BLockERror test done by the KProbe tool.
You will know if this strategy change was a good idea soon after you post the KProbe 4x scan speed result here :).
To save and attach a KProbe or Nero cdspeed scan: After the scan is complete, click the small diskette button on the toolbar or title bar and at the save as dialog select a file type of .PNG. Attach the saved file to your post by using the “Manage Attachments” button in the “postreply”, “Go Advanced” or “Quotepost” mode.

#15

The change you made influences just the CMC MAG. AE1 and CMC MAG. AF1 media codes. All others are untouched.

Hi ala42,

What burn strategy should I use for FUJIFILM03 disks? The default 2x strategy produces bad burns :frowning:

Thanks,
xytise

#17

Check the strategy changing thread, maybe you find help there. You could try your luck with TYG01 or TYG02, but I have never used FUJIFILM03 on my burner.

Hope the follwoing is clear: I have three DVD burn scenarios:

  1. The attached txt and png files are of a Memorex CMG 8x disk that was burned at 2x after updating F/W to FS0K without restarting the computer, and previous to applying the MSCE hack.

(By the way, the 8x DVD in #1 was burned at 2x speed. What I mean by reboot or restart is that in #1 I actually burned a DVD right after I updated to FS0K w/o restarting the computer. This may have been an issue with the DVD in #1 because right after I burned #1 I restarted my computer and the “found new h/w” message came up for the LDW-411S. I guess Windows XP SP2 saw that the F/W was new and figured the burner was new.)

I guess #1 was a really bad burn. The DVD plays very poorly, especially towards the end.

Hope all this info is useful to someone!!! I’m just glad I can burn Memorex 8x DVD-R’s at 4x speed!!! Thanks ala42!!!
