Laptop Optiarc AD-5560A defective?

So heres the thing: today I tried to burn my first DVD+R from an ISO.

I tried three times, all times it said it “completed successfully” but in actuality the DVD was garbage and couldn’t be read.

I tried: Nero 8: 6x, ImgBurn: 6x, and CDBurnerXP: 2.4x
All completed successfully, but actually failed.

(There were many significant and distinct banding on the DVD+R’s after burning, not the smooth continuous one color that you can see if it was recorded properly, 2.4x had the least amount of banding)

I then took the ISO and the same media to a Desktop and it burned it fine at 8x.

I talked to Dell support, I ran diagnostics (they were read only), they all passed. The ISO were created from this burner so it reads well, no issues there but the problem is burning.

Also when I tried putting the “coasters” back into the Optiarc… it said it was blank media and Nero let me write to it again… and it completed successfully but it got to 100% went to 0% and then 100% a few time and then said it was completed successfully… this has NEVER happened to me ever. Whenever I got a coaster it NEVER let me re-write to it…

Hope this helps with the trouble shooting! Though I think I’m going to end up trying to get a replacement… my guess is poor/loss of power control from what I have read.

Is it still under warranty? If so I would exchange it.

Yea less than 2 months… so yea thats what I figured. Thanks, just wanted to make sure it wasn’t user error.

So I just chatted with Dell and after a little bit of work got the option to replace with either: HLDS, TSST, NEC, or Pioneer. Went with the Pioneer, hope that was the right one!

I think you should try with Verbatim DVD±R media first, burning at 6x.

I disagree. :disagree:
I wouldn’t use this drive for none other than to read data. I would advise to keep it at no more than 4x max. otherwise I would invest in an external dvd drive.

I half agree.

The reason why I only half agree is that I’ve noticed NEC’s slim drives do not have the best write strategy for Moser Baer India’s media–no matter the code. Swapping the strategy with MCC media code strategies has helped some with this, though. :iagree:

But I would still keep it at 4x, and try to mainly use it to read discs.
