LaCie Slim DVD±RW, Design by F.A. Porsche 8x. Is it a NEC 6500?

Ok, I just ordered a LaCie Slim DVD±RW, Design by F.A. Porsche 8x, it is a external laptop drive, that is powered by the USB 2.0 port itself.

What I was wondering is, it is a rebadged NEC 6500, it seems to have the same read/write speeds, but the NEC 6500 has 24x CD-r writing and the LaCie only 16x.

If it is the NEC 6500, would it be possible to crossflash it using BinFlash using Liggy’s riplock+RPC1 2.24 firmware, and then, would it be safe to burn CD-R at 24x?.

Bump?

If it really is a 6500 drive AND the Porsche enclosure forwards all necessary commands to your drive, then you should be able to flash my modified Firmwares with Binflash.

Just start the GUI version and see if your drive is shown. If it is shown, this at least means that you have a NEC drive inside.

Many thanks for the reply.
With your 2.24 patched firmware in the readme.txt is says

224orig.exe - Added support for booktype setting
224fast.exe - Including riplock patch
224rpc1.exe - Including riplock and RPC1 patch

does 224rpc1.exe also have the booktype setting enabled?

Sure. They are all based on each other. orig is the base for my fast firmware and fast is the base for my rpc1 firmware.

Thanks, I understand that now.
The drive should be coming on Wednesday, so I will try it out then.

Thanks for your help!

Anyone try this? Does the patched firmware for the 6500 work on the LaCie Slim drive?
