Looks like maybe an older model. They announced new versions of the MacBook Air this week:

http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/family/macbook_air?mco=MTI4MDI

But the real question is whether you need the ultraportability of the Air and can live with all its compromises (no internal optical drive, limited i/o ports, etc.). If not then you’d get more bang for the buck with the non-Air MacBooks. And again, they just announced new models this week:

http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/family/macbook_pro?mco=MTIzMDY

It’s only a good deal if he travels a lot and needs the smallest and lightest laptop possible.

If not, it’s better to get one of the other models.

I agree with the others. The Air is definitely the better option if you need ultra portability.

But if you think he can stand a bit more “heft”, a standard MacBook/MacBook Pro has more ports, the optical drive, and can provide a bit more power with a slightly longer battery life for a bit cheaper.

Thanks everyone,

Decided to with very basic model of it…if anyone found good deal can post here please.

Deals on Macs are few and far between. Best bet might be to poke around the Apple on-line store and see if any of these are of interest and applicable: a) education discount, b) $100 off a printer purchased at same time, c) free iPod Touch (via rebate) if purchased by a student, d) bargains on refurbished units.

I would go with Option D and get the AppleCare Protection Plan, especially on a portable machine.

It will give you three years of coverage and phone support on anything that has to do with the hardware and any Apple software.
